Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 1TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

Bought this external drive to back up pictures. The size is smaller than I thought, which means it’s easier to travel with it. I’d definitely recommend it for anybody who needs data backup or archive.

Small, durable and serves it’s purpose. I store my projects shot in 4K on here. I also edit straight from my software to the HD and it works fast and has no lag. For the price, GET IT. It’s awesome. Also – Don’t Forget to Format.

Not the fastest, but for the price it’s great. After I make proxies to edit 4k it runs smoothly. I like that the connection is USB-C.

I use it to backup short film footage. It’s small and was cheap. I think it was good value, but only time will tell. The chord connection does not seem to be to sturdy.

If I could turn back time I would not have got this WD 1TB Passport. It does not allow me to transfer files between my MAC & PC. So I use it as a backup storage that id offline when not in use.

I’ve been using WD bus powered drives for 15 years now and have always been very satisfied with them. I just bought a new MacBook Air which has USB-C ports and all my other drives are only USB 2.0. The My Passport Ultra fits the bill perfectly, with the faster USB 3.2 gen 1 over a USB-C connection. WD is nice enough to provide a type C to type A adapter so I can connect the drive to other devices that are type A only, but it is designed to interconnect only with the WD provided cable. Since cables can fail or get lost, I’d prefer a cable and adapter not requiring a proprietary interlock method. While the drive has very fast read and write sppeds, easily 5X what my USB 2.0 drives can do with my new MacBook, a side effect of that speed is it gets very warm during large transfers, like a backup. It’s obviously not possible to have venting like larger, AC powered drives. Small transfers do not heat it up as much. Overall, very satisfied, docked one star for the USB adapter and heat issues. I would recommend this drive despite those flaws.

With external hard drives … I am always a little concerned … when might they crash? For this reason, I bought the 2 pack – 1 TB HD so that I have a backup external HD. So far the product stores my photos and works as advertised … but always have a backup plan when working with external HD’s

I’m using this drive to store and edit HD (1080i) media with Premiere on our company’s iMacs. Never a problem with slow data throughput.

This is the silver version which I thought might match my MacBook Pro but it doesn’t really as it has a slight blue cast to it. This doesn’t worry me though as I didn’t buy it as a matching accessory. I bought it because I have a camera which produces 50mb RAW files and 10mb jpegs. So I wanted plenty of capacity, which this has by the bucket load. My preference was for a 4TB disk as I have read bad press on the 3Tb ones in general, not specifically from WD. I also have an older 2TB version in blue which is looking worn after 2 years of abuse in my bag but I didn’t notice this until I put the new one alongside, so I have the same expectations of this one. They are both sturdy looking units and the metal casing on all but the base makes these a must have if you need your portable drive to be rugged. I can’t fault the performance, with a USB 3 connection it zips through file transfers pretty quickly. Not quite as quick as my thunderbolt drive but out on the road speed isn’t really my priority, reliability is. If this unit is as reliable as my 2tb one I will be very very happy.

Never worked attempted to reformat for Mac and the drive would not accept reformatting. It’s a piece of junk. I have a Mac formatted drive from the same manufacturer that worked without a problem. Btw. The return form on website is broken so you have speak with a person.
