Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 1TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

plugged in and installed the backup software from WD, selected folders to back up. only caveat is that the computer has to be on at the scheduled time of backups or else it will miss the backup. too bad the software does not wake up the pc.

Purchased 2 4 TB drives for use as Lightroom master and back up. Got everything transferred and recognized by LR. Today drive won’t mount. Checked the cables, etc. So glad I had a back up, but worry about the other new drive….

I have used several of these over the years. I did have one start giving me error messages occasionally, which is a bit scary. Always managed to get it going again though.

I’m only giving 4 stars due to speed. Despite being USB 3 and being plugged into a USB 3 port, it runs at fairly close to regular USB speeds (18mb/s). My other USB 3 drives consistently run 3-5 mb/s faster. That said, setup was simple and transferring my entire photo library (225K images) went off without a hitch (took about 28 hours). I have other WD drives and none have failed me yet, and I hope for the same quality here. I use this as my 3rd drive for my photo library and Lightroom catalogue and stash it in a fire safe at home. When I travel, I stash a drive in the fire safe, one in my office at work, and one stays by my computer at home. Compact, high capacity drives like this one are just the ticket for portable library backup, but are a bit slow to use as working drives. All in all, this is an elegant, well built, very compact drive with huge capacity. Definitely recommended.

I purchased this due to a change in my Carbonite coverage and it was ideal for the application I had. Very simple to install and use.

when i bought this it did not say clearly enough that it was only for windows. i had to phone the 1 800 number for WD to figure out how to format if for Mac. next time read carefully which system it is preformatted for.

I needed a reliable portable hard drive to keep my photo editing mobile! This was the answer to being able to edit photos from multiple locations and on multiple devices!

small, portable, fast, reliable. What I especially like – the ability to make it secure right out of the box. Software gives you the ability to create password to the whole drive, so nobody else can get into it.

I purchased this drive to store photographs while I am out and about making photographs and traveling away from home with my laptop. It is fantastic, compact lots of storage and I would highly recommend it.

If your searching for the best storage device goes for it. But your main goal is, you have huge data means this is the better choice for you with a 130MB/s read and write speed, whereas you have a small amount of data but speed is the main means you opt for SSD from Sandisk or WD which gives a maximum speed of 850MB/s read and write speed. And I have to say about the best 256-AES security which is good with the large storage capacity. I conclude by saying that this best for each penny you spend. CAUTION: If you are ordering from outside, the USA means aware of the duty amount charged by the customs in your country.

I have been using these drives since I switched to USB 3.0 All of them are still working however I will say that at times my MacBook Pro has trouble ejecting them and I have to force quit to eject the drives don’t know why it does that… Also I like the fact that you can password protect the passport drives.

I purchased the My Passport Ultra 5TB and received it today. As soon as I plugged in into my USB port, the Clicking began, aka “The Click Of death”. I noticed a lot of people that have experienced connectivity issues have laptops. I am so glad I didn’t get hooked on those devices. I prefer speed over convenience. Being a system builder by profession and hobby, I never have connectivity issues. However, this drive suffers from mechanical issues. Oh yes, I did experience where the computer no longer recognized the drive, but that only lasted for a short time. After seeing the price being less expensive for a 5TB over a 4TB, you know that there is an issue with the device based on its capac I have had two 1TB My Passport, and one 2TB Elements that I purchased years ago. You know what? They continue to run a peak efficiency. My data is too important to me to trust WD any further. They sell drives that they know have an issue and continue to sell them. I have had two 1TB Passport, and one 2TB Elements that I purchased years ago. You know what? They continue to run a peak efficiency.

I got this hard drive for a system backup. I am checking to see how it works with Apple’s Time Machine. So far it is working very well. I will then get another one just like it to rotate Off-site to protect my data. This is in addition to a cloud storage.

PROS – USB powered and 2 TB worth of data storage – what else could you want? does not take up a lot of desk space. CONS – wish the included cables were longer!
