Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 1TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

It’s small, portable, seems to be well built and I’ve never had a problem with it! This is my third one I’ve purchased this year! Reasonable price for that much storage as well. I love having tiny drives that don’t clutter up my desk!

It was simple to install and does everything I need for storage.

Well, I can understand why this has been discontinued, the most unreliable drive I have ever purchased by WD. Drive failed after less than 6 months. As this was my primary iMac Time Machine backup drive this could have been catastrophic. As it is I had to spend $200 and 2 days having the drive rebuilt so I could get my data. Now very concerned with the half-dozen smaller capacity WD drives I’ve recently purchased.

Looks nice. Works as intended. Not packaged very well. Good bubble wrap but only on top side of box, not all around hard-drive package.

Plug and play… worked correctly out-of-the-box. 2Tb storage allows for multiple full system images as well as large data backups.

Updated from much older WD 1TB drive large box. The new My Passport is smaller, compact and runs well on USB. The Backup software works well for daily backups. Best feature, NO power supply needed, very portable, fast and ideal for archive backup.

My wife uses this for backups, which have always been a hassle for her. She is thrilled that this drive is (a) very small, and (b) bus powered. It’s not especially speedy plugging into her laptop’s USB2 ports, but after all, those parts are only USB2. Of course, time will tell. Durability is a big issue with any hard drive. One question: I bought the drive thinking that, when she upgrades to a laptop with USB3 ports, this drive will plug into those ports and work at USB3 speed. What I don’t know is whether I’ll need a USB3-to-USB3 cable in order to get USB3 speed. What comes with the drive is a USB3 (for the drive) to USB2 (for the laptop) cable.

I bought this drive as a second backup for my MacBook Pro. My primary backup drive is a thunderbolt that I use each time I add significant data. I backup to the second drive about once a month and keep it in the safe deposit box at my bank. While I like the speed of the thunderbolt drive, I thought the USB 3.0 would be fast enough and maybe even as fast. I couldn’t find any test that actually compared the two drives. The difference in speed between this Passport USB 3.0 and other USB 2.0 drives that I have used is like night and day. That said, its still not as fast as the thunderbolt drive. But for the way I’m using the drive I’m more than satisfied with the speed. After having a little time with the two drives, I don’t think its worth the difference in money to use a thunderbolt drive for backup. However, if you need an external drive for a scratch disk or second boot drive, then the thunderbolt is worth considering. I’ve used WD drives in the past and have always been satisfied with them just as I am with this new Passport. In addition to the other qualities, the size of the drive is very nice as space in my safe deposit box is at a premium

The My Passport Ultra Portable Hard Drive is a wonderful product. Never fails to backup my files, and run smoothly. This is the second one I have purchased, and I will continue to buy in the future.

This 5TB drive was purchased to replace a WD 2TB portal USB drive, which built-in encryption. The included USB Type-C to regular USB adapter is perfect, as it allows me to connect to my laptop using USB Type-C and my desktop using the converter/adapter. I use it both for storing files and for performing a full image backup of my desktop PC and Laptop. Great product!
