Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 1TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I use this to back up 3 home computers. Even with newest updates of software doesn’t always let me safely remove (unplug the usb connection) when the time comes to do so. This is an ongoing issue that WD doesn’t see fit to resolve. I’ve had WD backup drives for many years and though the drives have all been flawless for me, their packaged software has always been quirky or downright scary. If you have the savvy or desire, might be best to use different backup software. The HD itself seemed to work fine and the USB 3.0 is nice and fast compared to my older 1 TB My Passport.

Delivered ready to use on a Windows or OSX computer: Connect the drive and you’re set to go. In my case, I reformatted it for use win OSX only. Cost? Economical. Sure you can indeed larger capacity drives, but I believe 1TB is large enough to hold pretty much all that is in my computer.

First explain the headline – Great Little – as in physical size – (but not – as in 1TB of storage). Small form makes it easy to carry, single cable for data & power makes it convenient to use. Using it to replace old, bulky & slow drive for our 150,000 music files we ripped from our collection of albums, tapes and CDs. Only thing not great was me only ordering the 1TB instead of the 2TB drive…

I love WD backup drives and have 5 of them but the new backup software is garbage. The Smartware that WD once used was spot on and easy to use but not so for the new WD Backup software. It is not intuitive and is difficult to understand. To top it off the software is extremely slow and makes me think that the software is not responding properly. When I call for support I am directed to India and have a difficult time understanding the individual. Although the tech is very nice I can tell that he is just as frustrated as I because I don’t understand him. Sorry to say that the backup software makes me want to turn to another product line.

Good product …

Very large capacity, reasonably fast and quiet. Usb cord is a little short, and drive is thicker and heavier than smaller capacity drives.

Of course hard drives are great until they don’t work any more. So this review is just for ease of use etc. Hopefully this WD portable HD will keep running for many years to come. I can retire my older, less reliable drives by transferring their content to this drive. The thing I love most about current portable HD drives is that they are USB powered. This drive provides 2TB at a great price, it’s very quiet and looks good. Current digital cameras produce very large files so it’s great to get all that capacity in this nice compact HD. By accident I ordered the Windows version of this drive even though I have an Apple PC. But WD had really excellent instructions for how to reformat this drive for Apple using my computer’s built-in Disk Utility program. I followed the step-by-step instructions and got it up and running in just a few minutes. I was impressed with how good the instructions were (including screen shots) The best thing is that I didn’t have to return the product to B & H.

Small, lightweight and lots of storage. Data storage has come a long way. I still remember paying 1 dollar per megabytes for a hard drive…lol. Buy one!!!

This 1.5TB drive does exactly what I needed it to do -back up my Mac with timemachine and all my photos. I have a LOT of photos and wanted them all in one place. I considered getting a 2TB drive, but for the price, this one won out. It worked great with a quick reformat for my Mac. I simply transfered a couple of the pertient documents to the computer and had timemachine reformat the drive. The only thing I dislike is the flashing blue light on the drive (only when it seems to be asleep). I only notice it at night, so I can live with it. Other than that, I don’t even realize it’s sitting right in front of me.

Thinner than the older models, and the USB-C connection helps make it a bit faster too.

I would rate 6 or even 7 stars if I could!

USB 3 performance is great. USB powered is convenient and better than ac power. Footprint is good space saver for desk and travel, little larger than deck of playing cards. As years go by tech basics hopefully gets better and less expensive. Some stuff become obsolete, some are still necessity. This 2TB was destination transfer and back-up of older smaller external drives. Consolidation: although I wouldn’t recommend putting everything CRITICALLY IMPORTANT onto one large electronic/ mechanical drive, but personal prudence should be in effect. Selected most important files and transferred those onto Solid State flash drive. SSD are currently the safest electronic medium but large capacity are very expensive at the moment.

Love how affordable a portable 4TB has become. I use these to backup my videos on long shoots. Due to experience, I always get two so one can backup the other if one breaks.

Has a nice build quality. We will see how long it lasts. My seagate barely made 2 years. All my western digitalis are still working.

I have been using WD Passport drive since they started at 500gb and the newest is now 5TB in the Ultra line. The unit comes with one cable USB-C, but they use a nice little adapter for USB-A that plugs one. The drive is fast for a unit that has no power supply. There is WS Security software that will encrypt all your files and keep everything safe. I have not had one of these go back unlike Seagate which is why I keep buying WD. Get a little padded case cheap on Amazon and you can take this drive with you anywhere. Great drive, get one you won’t be sorry.
