If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I have a windows computer at home and mac at school. I transfer all of my photos on windows interface and edit them on the mac. I had to ask an IT staff to reformat the drive so I could write to it on mac, he spent several hours on it and when he brought it to me he said Nightmare, never again. Other than that it serves the purpose of portable drive pretty well.

It is compact in size using 2.5 hard drive and OK for data transfer in terms of speed with its UPB 3.0 port. The data speeds though are purposely exaggerate and misleading as they refer to the theoretical data movement speed through the USB 3.0 bus and not the actual write speed of the hard drive. Actual write speed for sequential writes as when using it for backups is 101 MB/s or a fourth of what is claimed even with USB 2.0. Forget about 5GB/s which is stated by Western Digital. There is no RAID as with the LaCie double drive units so this should not be used as anything other than temporary additional storage for data.

Use this for video projects and storage. Not sure what kind of drive is inside, but it’s fast enough for editing. I really like that it is powered via USB 3 with one cable and there is now AC plugin cord.

Well, this was a disappointment. Worked great right out of the box and thanks to the speed of the USB 3.0, it copied over about 30gb in about 20 minutes. However, the next time I plugged it in, it wasn’t responding. Tried plugging it in to different computers and tried a different cable. Neither worked. Thankfully the drive was supposed to be a backup of a backup. So I didn’t lose the data completely. Anyway, I won’t be replacing it with another one. I can’t trust it at this point.

1TB for under $ bucks in a super-compact form-factor. Very please. Was recognized by my iMac immediatley, I formatted with with Disk Utility, and have been using it to clone my main drive with no problems. Very quiet, and the fit and finish is nice, too.

Transfer speeds (what else is this for?) are quite good. USB 3.0 transfer speeds are far better than its predecessor. Transferred 400GB in a few (less than 4) hours.The backup software is the usual free software, upgrade-able to Pro for a fee. Backup software, while mostly successful, is nothing to write home about. Diagnostic is even more simplistic – nothing too complicated. OK status to tell you the test passed. That’s it. My older WD drive has lasted me 5+ years with no problems. Hoping this does as well. I’ll just delete the ‘free’ software utilities.

This drive is a major step up from a junky old 250 GB drive I have relied on for years. It is quick to transfer files and has thus far proved to be very reliable! A hard drive really proves itself over time, and one should really back up to multiple sources to ensure their data is safe, but this makes a great compliment to another hard drive or cloud data storage because of its great price. A++!

I received the product with expedited shipping with 2 days. It holds lots of data, handy with a chromebook. BUT, why don’t they say 1.81TB? It doesn’t hold 2TB.

I just purchased a 2018 Macbook Pro and wanted an external hard drive for its Time Machine software. Came formatted for the Mac and worked without any drama or issues. The drive is boxes with a rather short USB type-C cable and a USB type-A dongle. C-cable fits tightly for a good connection. Ive used the dongle for some older Window devices without issue. Product was in-stock and arrived in a reasonable time. Im very satisfied with my purchase.
