Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 1TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

Doesn’t work like a back-up hard drive like I thought it would. No different than a USB storage device. I had to copy and paste into it. I get a bunch of error messages- can’t copy this file; need administrator permission; can’t copy that file because it’s in use; can’t copy that file because I can’t find it, etc. I am the administrator; nothing is open except as required to copy and paste the files. The software on the device can’t even find it’s own device; the device actually shows in one tab of the software it comps with, but when I try to run it to back up my system to the device, it says it can’t find the device. How come it can’t find itself to run a back-up? The Toshiba external drive I bought 6 years ago and 2 computers ago was much better. You could just tell it to run the backup and it would save everything. You didn’t have to babysit it and skip a bunch of stuff. Also, the type C connection is supposed to make saving / transfer faster, but it doesn’t; it’s very slow. When I use the adapter to a standard USB connection, it actually runs faster. This device is a waste of money. Just buy a USB drive with a lot of storage.

I finally solved a problem that had been haunting me for the last year. When I switched to a MacBook Air with 500GB of SSD storage from my trusty 17 MacBoo Pro with a 1TB SSD, I had a problem. My 425GB iPhoto Library was too big to have with me on the MB Air. I know it is freakish, but I love having ALL my photos available to me (especially when using iPhoto Faces). I would frequently carry the MacBoo Pro with me and leave it in the car, just in case I needed access to some Faces. Thanks to the 2TB My Passport Ultra Portable Hard Drive I now keep in my laptop bag, I can access my full iPhoto Library I copied from the Pro to the Passport drive. No more running out to the car or carrying my much larger workhorse MacBook Pro. The USB3 transfer from the Pro went smoothly and quickly. Reformatting the drive, prior to loading the iPhoto Library onto the Passport, to the MAC OS Extended (journalized) format was simple and effective. The Passport works wonderfully with my MacBook Air. I also use it for Time Machine backups–wonderful having 2TB! Additionally, I love the RED color! This is a fast, compact, and reliable drive (not SSD fast, but 2TB is worth the tradeoff). I love it!

I primarily use this USB powered drive to move files from my cameras to drive while on the road. I also use it to save other files which I need while on the go. Its size is very compact and it has power on LED. It does not have ON/OFF switch I do not use built in back u software as I do my back up on my own site

I bought this hard drive to work as my time machine for my iMac. The drive is fast, pretty, small, and works almost perfectly. The one issue I have is that it will randomly disconnect when it is plugged straight into my iMac. This interrupts my backup and makes me worry about the integrity of the drive. After reading several reviews, forums, and other complaints I realized that this is a problem with how much power the drive is sucking from the computer. Apparently, the drive uses too much power when it is backing up large amounts of data. Since it is USB powered and there is a limit to how much power USB can provide the drive will shut down and disconnect. I read that many people have called WD to get a Y cable to connect to 2 USB ports. However, I found out that using a powered USB hub makes the drive work perfectly and not disconnect. Before, I could barely get my iMac to backup without the drive disconnecting. Now it never disconnects. WD knows about this issue but they refused to admit it unless you call them and ask for a Y cable. For that I have to only give them 4 stars.

I teach a digital photography class, usually 16 students or so. Part of their course fee purchases an external hard drive for archiving photos and as a base location for image storage for Adobe Lightroom. I’ve used the Passport brand hard drives and they have always been reliable and durable.

I have a couple of these drives. They really come in handy for overflow storage when I need to be portable and they are also great as quick clone drives if you ever need to replace a drive. Not o big to keep handy.

Small, compact, requires no AC power. Purchased this for my iTunes music and photos. It meets all of my expectations for a portable device. I may get another as it is more convenient than having to take laptop to desk where I keep my 3 other external hard drives.

I used this on a Mac for Time Machine backup. It did not come formatted to use out of the box, but a simple web search for initializing and formatting will get you going. The drive has performed well so far, and of course B&H delivery was simply the best.
