This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I’ve gotten so many hard drives over the years being a filmmaker. This is by far my favorite. It is fast and has a lot of room for video files. I can edit directly off this drive and it doesn’t seem to be slow at all. Very happy with this one.

The external hard drive works as advertised on my Mac. I haven’t measured the data transfer speeds, but it felt pretty quick. My only complaint is that the cable supplied with the hard drive didn’t work. I tried plugging it in multiple ports but no luck. Luckily I had a USB C to USB C phone charger cable that came in handy.

I have several of these drives for backups and travel photos. The USB 3 speed is nice. You need to be careful to align the cord plug wit the drive receptacle to not cause damage. The WD software for testing the drive is reasonable but I wish it would give more info than just passed. It would be nice to have details about the results like if any bad sector are found, how many tested etc. If the plug in was a bit more reliable/easy and the test software gave more info, I would rate this 5 stars instead of 4.

Easy to use, plug and play on my Win7 machine, and no software required to use the basic functions. Right out of the box I have put over 1.1TB of backup data on it.The price per TB is good for this 1.5TB My Passport. I especially like the small size and the build quality. The shell is made of plastic, but the touch and feel both make me like this little portable drive (which holds big data!)I have an old WD My Passport (320GB) portable drive for 6 years, still running no problem. That gives me some confidence on buying this new one.

We used the product to store video of a weekend series of workshops and a concert/awards ceremony. It has plenty of storage space and is fast. Ideal for audio/video storage. It is small and light and very portable. We gave it to the videographer to load with all his video. He got it back to us and then we gave it to our website manager and social media director to excerpt onto Facebook, Youtube and our websites. Ordering from B&H was simple and fast. This was by far the least expensive per GB. Very easy to set up and use. The only reason for 4 stars (instead of 5) is that the software installs 3 separate programs instead of one: (1) security; (2) settings; (3) backup.

THe product… is great… works perfectly… but talk about over complicated STUPID INSTRUCTIONS… and throwing software at you that you DON’T NEED and DON’t WANT… with the POOREST OF EXPLANATIONS of what the software does …. I printed out about 30 pages of what turned out to be COMPLETE NONSENSE… I think some of these tech writers pride themselves in throwing around terms like RESTORE and then not explaining any of what the write. I was able to transfer a SYSTEM IMAGE to the new hard drive… WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE. Why can’t they explain things so people can understand it.
