If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I needed backup/restore with Mac time machine. That worked well with non-mac version of WD Passport, after automatic reformatting. The whole process takes long time due to mac’s security, while the result was good. No extra cables needed, power over USB-C.

The included USB-C cable is total garbage. It doesn’t fit flush with the Mac and, if you bump it the tiniest bit, the drive will disconnect from the computer. On the HD side, there is so much play in the USB-C connector that it’s amazing it can even (occasionally) communicate with the computer. It took multiple connection attempts to even get the drive to mount. I’m sending this back for a refund!

Transfers data fast (as long as you have a USB 3.0 port) and it is very compact. No power supply – just plug it in and you are set. Looks like a very good product. So far I am impressed.

Can be used as a backup device by running the included WD SmartWare software Can also be used as a large storage device. If you have laptop with only a 128GB SSD you can use this 1TB WD hard drive to store a large number of files such as when shooting pictures on assignment save a copy of the original RAW files to the WD device
