Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 2TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 2TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

This drive is well built and comes with a three year warranty which I hope means it is built to last and with higher quality components.

As an owner of several WD MyPassport drives over about five years, I can say this 3TB drive does not fall short from the convenience, speed and reliability I have come to expect in previous models. I have traveled far and wide carrying MyPassport devices, and find them lightweight, compact, and fairly durable. Never had a hitch. This model is the exact same thickness as it’s 2TB predecessor, and seems to me slightly quieter. I find no major difference in external materials and construction, although I do think the top panel feels a bit more solid to the tap of the finger.

The Western Digital My Passport is a good, reliable portable hard drive. We’ve had a lot of success with these at work where they’re not always treated with extreme care.

I bought the 500GB My Passport Ultra to back up two PCs. I don’t have any video files, raw digital photos or other types of files that consume a lot of disk space, so 500GB is way more than adequate for me. My needs exceeded the capacity of smaller thumb drives (8GB, 16GB), so I figured it was time to go for an extrnal HDD, especially since they’re now so small and relatively inexpensive. I paid almost as much for my first thumb drive (4GB) as I did for this 500GB portable HDD! The drive is small, fast and Windows 7 (64 bit) installed the necessry driver and had it ready for use very quickly. I didn’t install any of the software included on the HDD. I do not like using backup software like WD’s SmartWare that stores data in a proprietary format. I don’t care that it can save space; space is not an issue for me and reliable access to my data is paramont. I used Bvckup 2 (Yes, thats a ‘v’ not an ‘a’.), which is simple, quick and efficient, and I can access my files with anything that has a USB port and can read files stored in NTFS. As I’ve just started using it, I can’t speak for its reliability. But I’ve used WD HDDs in all of my computers since the late 1990s and have never had a problem, which is the primary reason I chose WD as my first portable HDD. As others have noted, you will probably want a longer USB 3.0 cable than the one packaged with this drive. I bought a 3′ Pearson from B&H and it seems to be a very good cable. And I will probably be purchasing a case smoetime soon.

These WD drives have been the most worry-free of all such external drives I’ve purchased over the years. I purchased this 1TB model to serve as an external cloned backup for a Macbook Pro laptop with a 500GB internal drive. At least once a day, I’ll run SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket software, to create a perfect, bootable, just-in-case clone of my laptop.

The Ultra is going to be exactly what I was looking for. I bought 2 of these as gifts for my children, and with the included software and flexible options, they are so easy to use. The first device was completely backed up in just under 30 minutes using default settings.

Well, I can understand why this has been discontinued, the most unreliable drive I have ever purchased by WD. Drive failed after less than 6 months. As this was my primary iMac Time Machine backup drive this could have been catastrophic. As it is I had to spend $200 and 2 days having the drive rebuilt so I could get my data. Now very concerned with the half-dozen smaller capacity WD drives I’ve recently purchased.
