Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 4TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I have used several of these over the years. I did have one start giving me error messages occasionally, which is a bit scary. Always managed to get it going again though.

I purchased this 3TG Passport drive because my existing 750 MB backup drive (also a Passport) had run out of space due to a large amount of RAW photo files. The drive capacity is large enough to handle full backups of my main 256 GB SSD boot/program drive plus my 2 TB data drive. I cleaned up my old Passport and now use it for daily incremental file backups while the new drive is used for intermittent full drive backups. The drive is connected to a powered USB3 hub so the fast transfer speed makes it useful for full system backups. One caveat when installing in a Windows 10 system: The OS did not recognize the drive when first initialized – not the drive’s fault. I had to assign a drive letter through the Disk Management screen (Right-Click on the main Windows icon). So far, everything is working well.

My last several WD backup drives have failed within several months of purchase and cannot be repaired. It is possible that the reason is that I purchased from Amazon rather than B&H -Nevertheless I recommend you purchase a warranty plan

Given that the 2 TB version only cost a glass of wine more than the 1 TB, it was a no brainer. It is very fast. Only downside is that it is a bit wide. I formatted it so I can use it with my chromebook and it works great. Bought a nice case for it.

I use the hard drive for backup of my McBookAir. There is no problem with the disk but there is problem with TimeMacine which more often than not cannot crete directory for the backup. This is not the drive, this is the Apple OS.

I ordered several of these.. including 3 I believe, from B&H.. I use these HDs for archiving files. They get very little use, and just sit in a dry, cool place, and I have seen most of these fail on me. None of them mount quickly. I have to wait several minutes while the light is flashing, but no HD is appearing on my desktop. I have all of these formatted for my Mac BTW.. They should mount faster than that. Most of them have slowed waaaaaaaay down in their ability to upload data, by at least 50% slower if not 90% in some.. than the HDs that I replaced these with, which are the: WD 4TB My Passport USB 3.2 Gen 1 External Hard Drive (2019, Sky) -those are much better, they are fast, retain their speed, mount quickly.. I have them formatted the same exact way, and I just want to transfer all the data from the old ones, and smash them with a hammer, which would be very satisfying..! Crap…! These are absolutely crap..!

Comes with extra features and is a great portable hard drive. Works well for private backup that you can take with you. Small and easy to use. Also comes in other sizes with more capacity.

No problems. It is quiet. I use it to back up a new Apple 13.3 MacBook Air M1 Chip with Retina Display using Time Machine. It works great and the backups are fast. I highly recommend it.

Nice design and been working for the past few months. The supplied cable was very difficult to push in the drive at first, was being careful and didn’t want to break anything, it does go all the way in with a bit of a gentle jiggle.

This unit sits next to my iMac Studio M1 along with 3 other independent hard drives. Plug and play with a Mac. It’s quiet and reasonably quick. Used to back up photos. Although I leave it on the desktop it would be easy to transport – other than being heavier than SSD drives. Interfaces smoothly with automated back up programs – Carbon Copy Cloner and Back Blaze. Great value for 4 TB of storage.

I have had many WD hard drives and haven’t had a failure yet. Great size for packing and it has many storage options. I know how tough these drives are since my wife dropped it several times from about 2 feet on to cement. Still working.
