Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 4TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I have two of these drives along with three 1st-generation Passports (all 2 TB). I run them USB 2.0 through a powered USB hub connected to my laptop. On this drive I mostly store video (VOB) and music files (mostly .wav) and never run into any problems watching movies or listening to music. (Many people cite arcane speed data that in my experience has very little meaning in real-world usage. I never experience any lags or slowdowns due to USB 2.0.) The drive is lightweight, runs relatively cool, and is completely silent. I like that WD no longer pre-installs backup programs on these drives. All applications are contained in a folder on the drive, so installing is completely optional and up to the user. I do recommend the diagnostic program that is included.

Great drive for quick back-ups. I keep it in my bag to always have it on-hand. Upon arrival, I reformatted to ExFAT (on my Mac)so it will read/write on a Mac and PC. The only limitation is the PC has a 2GB file limit.

I have a morbid fear of losing my computer information. Just before I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I bought this, my 2nd passport so I have a duplicate backup. Plugged this newest passport in and it worked automatically and I now have peace of mind because of this. Plus got a great price from B &H and a 3 year warranty for $5 more than a refurbished passport with only a 3 or 6 month warranty. Highly recommend. The W10 upgrade went smoothly and now I no longer worry about losing my information/data. Plus B & H shipped priority mail at no charge.

I needed to replace a 1 TB standard drive, and the tech has produced portables with expanded capacity. The USB is not as fast, but its light, compact, and does the job.

I’m using the drive to hold the primary copy of my music. My primary music hard drive failed, so I copied my music from my backup drive to this drive. Performance was good during the copy. Hopefully the drive will last a long time.

My wife uses this for backups, which have always been a hassle for her. She is thrilled that this drive is (a) very small, and (b) bus powered. It’s not especially speedy plugging into her laptop’s USB2 ports, but after all, those parts are only USB2. Of course, time will tell. Durability is a big issue with any hard drive. One question: I bought the drive thinking that, when she upgrades to a laptop with USB3 ports, this drive will plug into those ports and work at USB3 speed. What I don’t know is whether I’ll need a USB3-to-USB3 cable in order to get USB3 speed. What comes with the drive is a USB3 (for the drive) to USB2 (for the laptop) cable.

I use this drive for my iMac Time Machine backups. I have 2 and use the 2nd one to keep off premises. It is very small and quiet when in use. Being so small I can take it with me easily; like when I went to Austria last summer. My one complaint is that the cable is very short; not long enough to reach the floor. For the one I keep connected all the time I got a longer cable so I don’t have to keep it on my desk. I can’t speak to the software. I erased it and formatted it for my iMac, having no interest in the software.

I bought this hard drive to work as my time machine for my iMac. The drive is fast, pretty, small, and works almost perfectly. The one issue I have is that it will randomly disconnect when it is plugged straight into my iMac. This interrupts my backup and makes me worry about the integrity of the drive. After reading several reviews, forums, and other complaints I realized that this is a problem with how much power the drive is sucking from the computer. Apparently, the drive uses too much power when it is backing up large amounts of data. Since it is USB powered and there is a limit to how much power USB can provide the drive will shut down and disconnect. I read that many people have called WD to get a Y cable to connect to 2 USB ports. However, I found out that using a powered USB hub makes the drive work perfectly and not disconnect. Before, I could barely get my iMac to backup without the drive disconnecting. Now it never disconnects. WD knows about this issue but they refused to admit it unless you call them and ask for a Y cable. For that I have to only give them 4 stars.

Hard to tell after only one week, but no complaints

It’s reasonably fast, rugged, and compact. And I should add stable. I bought a G-Tech drive R series drive for 3 times the price and it proved to be a bust. Granted, I wouldn’t want to stream audio of off the Passport but I bought it for storage and backup, and it’s perfect for that.

Plug & drop, no stress. WD should make this feature more clear, as the presence of unneeded software creates unnecessary effort. A small matter, easily remedied.

With an external hard drive, it is very good to have nothing to report. I have partitioned this drive and I use it as a backup. So far this drive has worked fine, presenting no problems and it looks good.

I erased/reformatted the drive when I got it, works fine with my Mac. The data transfer speed is good, and it is bus powered (less cables!). Good for in office backups, and it’s a perfect size to stuff into a safe deposit box for offsite storage. But for travel, I prefer the Ultra Metal Edition of this drive.
