If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

The WD brand is very thick, almost seems like a hard disk from 2 years ago. Not convincing enough that this is a 2016 model. The Seagate and other competitive brands are much sleeker. I also have the Seagate 2 tb model which I love. i am not getting the comparable disk speed either when using it with my macbook 13 air, so I’d recommend NOT getting this brand. I didn’t want to go through the hassle of shipping back as a return and then order another one as I don’t plan on travelling with the WD disk, but unless WD comes up with a better model – I’m very disappointed with this purchase.

it showed up and when I plugged it into the USB it installed itself like it should but when I removed it and then plugged it back in, it would not find the drive. I ended up removing the software and it is working as a spare storage device

Easy to use. Fast. Compact and light weight. I did have one crash on me recently after two years of hard use, but I didn’t hesitate to replace it with an identical model.

Had some bad experiences with WD drives in the past. Many of their early USB-2 portable drives had a chip set that was slower than snot, often less than half the speed of my other USB-2 drives. These, however, are as fast as any other USB-3 2.5 inch drives we have, are really solid and small. We use these as archive drives for our Apple Time Capsule Backups.

I partition these in half and am always using one of them wherever I go. One partition is allocated for Time Capsule backups and the second for backing up unedited RAW files for a given period. Once I fill up the 1gb partition allocated for unedited RAW files, I store the filled up drive and move on to a fresh drive. Having now used something like eight of these drives as described, I have not had a single problem in several years of using these drives. While they are not as fast as thunderbolt SSDs, these drives are plenty fast for my purposes and far more economical. I recommend them highly to anyone.

i bought this drive to use as a Time Machine backup. It was easy to set up and seems to be working fine so far ! I like the little rubber feet to prevent movement and the included adapter so I could use kit with my older MacBook Pro.

I always forget with these new drives you have to unlock/partition them before you can use them, so other than that extra step after taking it out of the box it’s pretty quick setup. The price is right for a low profile portable hard drive to use on production shoots or anything else for that matter as back up or transferring of media. My production team runs pretty lean and mean so anything that can save space and work fast is one of our primary concerns. This little gem works like a charm.
