Expand the storage on your Windows system and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 4TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

The My Passport Ultra 4TB drive works perfectly as an image file backup on my Mac. It mounts quickly and stores 70 MB RAW image files at up to approximately 110 MB/sec when connected via USB-C to an iMac It’s a very quiet drive and the metal-clad case runs completely cool, even during long periods of operation. Hopefully it will continue to work reliable for many years Power consumption (bus powered) is 216 mA when connected but not mounted, 318 mA mounted at idle, and 690-750 mA during data read/write operation at a bus voltage of 5.07V. I have not used the supplied bloatware which requires on-line registration and download of instruction manuals. Since the function and features of the included applications was not provided with the drive, I deleted it all and re-formatted when I first installed the drive.

Extra storage space is a must with the size of digital files. The 1 TB My Passport Ultra Portable External hard drive is a great product. The USB 3.0 speeds up the down loads and access by software. The portable size and build add a convenience when used with my laptop.

4 TB of storage (more than my computer) in a compact, attractive housing. No separate power supply required since it is USB powered. Does not clutter up your desk. A minor negative is the brightness of the white LED. It could almost double as a night light (I just fold a 3×5 card and set it to block the light when the computer and I sleep). I use it with File History set for daily backup. My WD My Book died after just over a year when it was used as a continuous backup. This one has only been in use for about 2 weeks and I’m hoping for better results.

the wd external drive was easily recognized by windows 7 pro 64-bit OS which is installed on a Lenovo laptop. drivers were initially loaded after pluging in the USB cable to the laptop. the WD external drive was immediately viewable using win7’s file manager. in my opinion this is a MUCH better product that seagates’ line of external drives and the WD has a longer warranty.

I’m not the smartest tech person, but am usually pretty good with this kind of thing. I can’t figure out how to save files to this drive using my Mac. I just want to store some photos. I’m sure I’ll figure it out, but the fact that I’ve spent more than 15 minutes on trying means its too complicated for the simple function I want to use it for.
