Compatible with computers running Windows and Mac OS, this hard drive connects to your system’s 3.5″ bay via the SATA III 6 Gb/s interface.
In terms of speed, this drive operates using WD’s IntelliPower rotational speed. This means that rpm speed of the drive depends on the operations being performed. If the drive is performing mostly sequential reads and writes, its speed will be increased as compared to if it were performing mostly random mode operations. This 6TB drive also features a 64MB cache to help ensure uninterrupted data transfers. Included with this hard drive are mounting screws.

As with my prior review, this is only for the picky purists: The latest one I got is an SMR (shingled) drive (the -AZ version number), not like the hard-to-find older CMR version (the -RZ version number) that had certain advantages. Looks like my previous purchase just a couple months back was using up old stock. But what can you do… SMR is the way big drives are going these days. It is still a decent drive.

I had only one more available drive bay in my storage system and needed something that could handle holding lots and lots of data. This fit the bill perfectly. It’s fast enough for archiving and streaming media off of it with no issue at a reasonable price range. I ran a few thorough test before putting it in production which if past with flying colors. I only wish it was even cheaper!

I had to RMA the first disk I got from B&H. It has died on the second day of my tests (I always test my disks before use). Western Digital replaced the failed disk and the replacement survived five days of Bart’s Stuff Test 5 just fine. Now my Time Capsule is 6TB and that’s enough for my 2.5TB worth of apple gear. It’s minus one star for RMA hassle (one has to accept such things nowadays).

This drive is great but it’s meant for archiving/backup. I think even the box says everyday storage. You should always use 7200RPM for your main OS. This drive is 5400RPM. And again, it’s perfect for archiving or backing up your files, media, etc. Highly recommend getting.

I bought this for my DVR in my ZModo Surveillance system due to the 5400 RPM, and it was recognized and was formatted easily within the menu. The operation is quiet and cool, not warm to the touch, low power saving. It formats down to 1.84GB after the Linux formatting of the drive, Windows is close to that. I hope that it lasts a long time. I have only been using it for about a week. Packaging was great.
