Aside from its 4TB of storage capacity, it’s built with 256-bit AES hardware encryption to help ensure your files are protected, and features USB 3.2 Gen 1 connectivity for fast transfers. It and comes formatted NTFS for Windows 8.1 and 10, but may be reformatted for other operating systems, and connects to your host system using an included micro-USB to USB Type-A cable. Users can take advantage of WD’s Discovery and Backup software to help manage and back up their files as well.

This is a perfect external HD. The included software works great on my Windows 7 Pro computer with 4GB of RAM. It runs in the background and does not slow down the computer. One recommendation, if you have it auto-backup the entire user directory, do not have it backup the AppData folder. I would highly recommend unchecking this folder. Having it backup that folder CAN slow down your computer slightly, since files are created in that folder with nearly every program.

They have come a long way with external hard drives. Just arrived so maybe too early to know if I’ll run into any issues down the line but I am very happy I have a way to store a large amount of photos and music off my mac without messing with TimeMachine. Super easy to use, just plug it in and you’re ready to go. With 4 TB of storage, I was able to fit my laptop backup and all my photos with plenty of room to spare. My only complaint would be the cable is a bit short, I’ve accidentally unplugged the hard drive when moving my laptop by accident.

The 500gb Passport drives I recently purchased will only be used for backups; so far so good. The drives arrived quickly and in great condition. I purchased the drives from B&H due to previous purchase experiences with them. I purchased various photography equipment from them back in the 70’s and 80’s.
