Aside from its 4TB of storage capacity, it’s built with 256-bit AES hardware encryption to help ensure your files are protected, and features USB 3.2 Gen 1 connectivity for fast transfers. It and comes formatted NTFS for Windows 8.1 and 10, but may be reformatted for other operating systems, and connects to your host system using an included micro-USB to USB Type-A cable. Users can take advantage of WD’s Discovery and Backup software to help manage and back up their files as well.

I have used WD disks for years and this new passport works well, as have other WD products. I have only had these for a few days, but have backed up a number of large directories and the speed, using USB 3 is quick as was expected.

I have only had it for a few days, so the main thing I can say is it works. Other than that, here is what CrystalDiskInfo says about it: Inside the enclosure is the WDC WD50NDZW 5000.9 GB drive. The interface is USB (Serial ATA). The transfer mode is SATA 600. The standard it follows is ACS-3 Revision 5. It features S.M.A.R.T., APM, NCQ, TRIM. And its rotation rate is 5400 RPM. Beyond that, it is in an elegant black enclosure, is USB powered, very quiet, and its temperature is is 36C after about 12 hours being hooked up to the computer so far today.

I have been purchasing the WD Passport drives for many years as external backup drives. They have never failed to work, even when I’ve pulled out out of the safe after 5 years of storage.

With the small footprint of USB powered drive, it brings 5TB capacity with affordable price. This is just right for backups. It is 5400 drive, do not expect 7200 speed or SSD for raw video editing application.

In the past I always purchased WD “My book” hard drives for backing up iMac and Ibook. Everything worked perfectly. In a few minutes installation was completed. My Passport 2T was not easy to install it because it kept crashing repeatedly. The positive thing is that I learned something about hard drive formatting and disk repairs. I installed the app for Mac. Impossible to make a mistake but the final result was that My passport 2T disk was formatted NFTS (Microsoft) instead of MacOS Extended needed for both disk read and write. After reformatting My passport 2T to Mac Os Extended I was able to back up my Ibook. Still, I had a couples crushes during disk back up. Using another app I repaired the disk and started all over again. Now finally it works. Not being an expert on this subject it took me some time to figure it out. Would I buy another one? Likely, I have to make sure the disk is formatted correctly and if it crashes repair it.

I love the quality and easy setup. It connected to Time Machine fairly quickly. I like the backup software that comes with it. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is that the USB connection is next to the flashing on/off light. I would have preferred to seen the light on the opposite end of the USB connection. Other that that it performs well

I attached this to a brand new 27 iMac to increase the storage, and for Time Machine backups, etc. It was very easy to set up and is working perfectly for my needs. I love the size and portability of this hard drive. Have nothing but good things to say about this drive. I’ve always been partial to Western Digital drives and this one does not disappoint.

I have been using this type of drive for 25 years or so. I started with a 40 GB by another company and every 3 years I buy a higher capacity and copy everything on the old one to the new drive then put the old one away for backup. Hard drives don’t suffer from too many reads or writes but time is a significant factor. HDD (hard disk drives) are much slower than SSDs but still plenty fast for spreadsheets, documents, and storing product information like PDFs. In this application all I want is reliable access to information for many years.
