If your Mac doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

Well, this was a disappointment. Worked great right out of the box and thanks to the speed of the USB 3.0, it copied over about 30gb in about 20 minutes. However, the next time I plugged it in, it wasn’t responding. Tried plugging it in to different computers and tried a different cable. Neither worked. Thankfully the drive was supposed to be a backup of a backup. So I didn’t lose the data completely. Anyway, I won’t be replacing it with another one. I can’t trust it at this point.

I bought this drive to back up my laptop because my hard drive was failing and had to be replaced. I was hoping to do a complete image (clone) of my existing drive. The software that comes with this unit does not have that function. Otherwise the unit works well to back up docs,photos, etc.

Been using this drive for a few weeks now. Works great, was super easy to format to use with Mac. 3.0 USB is faster than my old drives. I can edit footage easily and directly off of this in premiere pro cc no problems & no dropped frames. Great hard drive.

USB 3.0 makes it fast, it is very quiet, and it does not require an external power source. Add to it Western Digital reliability in a compact package and I don’t see how it could get much better. I use it to hold images and music files before archiving them. The included software even monitors the temperature of the drive for safe operation. Five stars!

The price is right, it’s small, and it’s bus powered. I use these as transfer drives to get video footage to clients. They’re not really fast enough to edit from, but they help get footage from one place to another.
