Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I am finally getting to use one of these drives on my Macbook Pro – I sent the first one back to WD after calling customer service. The same thing happened to the replacement, but luckily the customer service person the second time around managed to talk me through the trouble-shooting. They are optimised for Windows, and if you go through downloading all the WD utilities for Mac and so on and then try to do anything before doing a fiddly reformatting with Disk Utility, the drive will just keep crashing. Second time round this was fixed by uninstalling the WD application and rebooting the Mac, then going through Disk Utility. The website troubleshooting page can also talk you through this quite clearly. The first customer service person was helpful for getting me a return sorted out, and the second one was very patient talking me through the troubleshooting. Not for the technically faint-hearted though. If you want to just plug in and back-up, find something else if you are a Mac user. It is currently taking about 20 minutes to back-up 18Gb of data, I don’t know if that counts as fast these days or not….

I am a retired HS teacher who makes extra money running karaoke shows on the weekends. I store my music on the Passport HD. The sveltness of the Passport is a serious advantage, as well as using the USB drive as the source of power. I have had a number of Passport HDs over the years, and have found them to be exceptionally dependable. This version is the 3.0 USB version, and I SWEAR that it searches much more quickly than the last one I used. I have recommended it to other KJs. Great value and great performance!

I’ve been using Western Digital drives for the past 10 years. To date I have been more than satisfied with each purchase. This drive is no exception to the rule. The passport is great due to being pocket sized (roughly the size of a galaxy s4) and fast at the same time. The backup software is easy to use.

Love this drive. Using it with both Mac and Windows laptops as a backup and external storage for big or only occasionally needed stuff. Partitioned half into HFS+ to be used as Time Machine target and half into exFAT for everything else. Haven’t done any speed tests, for the purposes described above, it feels fast enough. On the cons side — it’s a little thicker that it’s 1TB version, so if you’re planning on carrying it around, consider 1TB as well.

I’m a professional wedding photographer and use my portable HD to back weddings up- especially when traveling. Since I’m a location based photographer- this comes in VERY handy. I have 3 other WD HD’s and I love the easy functionality and dependability of them. It is also light, small, compact, and self-powered, which is great when I’m not by a power source other than my laptop. I feel the price is spot-on, and what I would expect to pay when depending on something to hold and store something so precious- like wedding pictures. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs something portable, as a back-up, or just extra space for storage.

Apart from additional configuration for Mac OS (not unexpected) the drive is satisfactory. It is a conventional hard drive and not a solid-state drive (SSD). Therefor, it is much larger than a Seagate 2TB drive that I have.
