This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I am using this Passport Ultra drive as a general media backup drive. The transfer speeds are very fast at USB3.0 but can function fine when plugged into a USB2.0 source. Optional password protection a plus.

It does come preloaded with some software that tries to sell you stuff from WD’s partners but after you figure out what is needed and what isn’t – no complaints at all. Durable, Compact, little to no heat generation… pretty much what you’d expect from a portable 2TB Hard Drive.

DOWS NOT WORK AND STALLS MY WHOLE MACBOOK OS. Worked for about 2 minutes. I connected to my mbp, which recognized it. Then tried to move some files onto it, upon which process this drive got stuck at certain number of files, and stopped working. Froze my whole operating system. After that the system does not see it, neither in Finder nor in Disk utility, what’s more when I run disk utility with this drive plugged in, not even my hard drive shows up. If I remove it, my hard drive shows up. This is simply a dangerous piece of low quality tech. Unfortunately, I tested this product late, as I was busy with work, so the period for returns had passed. I purchased a Samsung T5 which so far works flawlessly. It is much more expensive so I bought this cheaper drive just to have second backup, but as you can see it is useless.

I bought this to back up my external drive so basically I am backing up my backup. It requires no power except the USB port. Plug it in, backup, unplug it and put it away. It ready for use right out of the box. Love it !!

This is like my fourth drive. It performs as advertised. Like with my other drives first thing I do is to reformat it with exfat file system: can use it with Mac and Windows computers. Only ‘negative’ thing that I can say is that the connection cable that comes with it is too short …you can’t even sit the disc either on the floor or on top of the tower …I guess for laptop use the length would be. Still, five stars. Buy a case to carry it around.
