This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your Mac doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

Of all my WD External Hard Drives, this is the only one I ever had to send back for replacement. Of course B&H was on top of getting my issue worked out, but I’ve never had a WD drive fail me before. Locked up right away, thankfully I hadn’t loaded any data on it. I’ve noticed the newer passport drives seem to be, shall we say, not so solid, like the older ones that I own. I will stay loyal to WD, but will look at their other Passport options. Thankfully, all worked out.

Nice drive size, great that it is powered by the USB port, however only capable of 3.6GB of storage. Window drivers for 64 bit system will cause Page_Fault_In_Nonpage_Area, DPC_watchdog_violation when you restart, reboot, or recover from sleep. I would not buy this until a new version of firmware is available for it. I have a 3GB Passport and it is firmware v2, it does not have this problem. WD is no help at all.

I have four of these and use them mostly for running continuous backups of the computers in the house. The software that comes with them works well and gets the job done. Also, when I travel, I’ll transfer all of my raw images onto one of these drives as a backup to what is on my notebook so I have two copies to bring home.

I use it mainly for storing lots of photos for processing in Lightroom. Easy to use, very fast and reliable so far. Also very quiet. Several nice utilities tell how much space is used and how much left. Will encrypt content but that seems like over kill – too much paranoia. Neat color

I bought this to backup my Macbook Pro. I’m a Graphic Design student so I don’t have that much to put on it right now, the 2TB is a good size for me at the moment and all I had to do was plug it in and Time Machine did the rest. It runs a little hot when you first set it up, but after it’s done with that it runs pretty smooth.

It’s small, powers off usb 3.0 or 2.0, and it’s fast. It’s very quiet when running. I had zero problems when transferring data from my 1GB NTFS usb backup drive that uses AC power, to this one which powered directly off the bus. Folks don’t realized just how important being able to power using usb can be. I actually had a power outage yesterday, and the ac powered 1GB turned off. This Western Digital stayed on, and was humming away 🙂
