Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

The old passports worked so well, this drive (after painstakingly being reformatted to work with a MAC) disconnects so easily to the point where you have to restart your computer. You also can eject the drive without a “force eject” that compromises the data. I regret purchasing this and would purchase the old style of passports, unfortunately B&H doesnt carry them anymore. Buyer beware.

I use these drives when shooting larger events and need to dump files to my laptop on site and bring back home to work on my larger/faster iMac. Small in size, large in capacity and that fact that it gets it’s power from the computer without the need for a separate power cord makes them a perfect storage tool for someone on the go. My application is extremely simplistic. As an artist my wife takes thousands of photo’s and needs a safe place to store them in an orderly way. We’ve been using WD My Passports for years and needed to upgrade from a 250MB unit. This 1TB unit should be a great photo repository for several years to come. We use USB 2.0 but expect to upgrade at some point to USB 3.0

I use the drive to backup my pc. It is very cheap portable storage that be moved to off-site location. The drive has very fast transfer rate and comes with a backup scheduling software. You can place files on the my-passport and delete them from your PC. The backup software will not delete during the next scheduled backup.

This was my first hard drive in this smaller size and I like it a lot. It has worked well for a few weeks now, I added about 1TB of data to it to send to a friend and it gave no problems, didn’t get too warm, and was very quiet. Price was excellent too!
