Expand the storage on your Mac and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 4TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your Mac doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I’m only giving 4 stars due to speed. Despite being USB 3 and being plugged into a USB 3 port, it runs at fairly close to regular USB speeds (18mb/s). My other USB 3 drives consistently run 3-5 mb/s faster. That said, setup was simple and transferring my entire photo library (225K images) went off without a hitch (took about 28 hours). I have other WD drives and none have failed me yet, and I hope for the same quality here. I use this as my 3rd drive for my photo library and Lightroom catalogue and stash it in a fire safe at home. When I travel, I stash a drive in the fire safe, one in my office at work, and one stays by my computer at home. Compact, high capacity drives like this one are just the ticket for portable library backup, but are a bit slow to use as working drives. All in all, this is an elegant, well built, very compact drive with huge capacity. Definitely recommended.

My wife uses this for backups, which have always been a hassle for her. She is thrilled that this drive is (a) very small, and (b) bus powered. It’s not especially speedy plugging into her laptop’s USB2 ports, but after all, those parts are only USB2. Of course, time will tell. Durability is a big issue with any hard drive. One question: I bought the drive thinking that, when she upgrades to a laptop with USB3 ports, this drive will plug into those ports and work at USB3 speed. What I don’t know is whether I’ll need a USB3-to-USB3 cable in order to get USB3 speed. What comes with the drive is a USB3 (for the drive) to USB2 (for the laptop) cable.

This is my second WD Passport, the last was bought in 2007 and is still working great, though only 160 gigs. New drive has a fast transfer and looks to be solidly built.

So far so good. It does its job…plus it’s raspberry colored. 3 TB…this year’s backup for last year’s files…and each year the capacity goes up but the price remains constant…a dream come true.

I needed to replace a 1 TB standard drive, and the tech has produced portables with expanded capacity. The USB is not as fast, but its light, compact, and does the job.

I’m using my passport as a backup device. I like the size, it’s small enough to take with me when I leave the house. Living close to the Gulf that’s a plus. I also like the 1TB capability.

Can’t say much about anything that has not happened yet. But I can say it’s a solid drive. It’s not as fast as an SSD but it gets the job done and does it without raising the ambient room temperature. It’s a quiet little guy. Almost reminds me of a Prius.

Not the fastest, but for the price it’s great. After I make proxies to edit 4k it runs smoothly. I like that the connection is USB-C.

PROS – USB powered and 2 TB worth of data storage – what else could you want? does not take up a lot of desk space. CONS – wish the included cables were longer!

Great drive for quick back-ups. I keep it in my bag to always have it on-hand. Upon arrival, I reformatted to ExFAT (on my Mac)so it will read/write on a Mac and PC. The only limitation is the PC has a 2GB file limit.

Got this when I purchased my 24-70 2.8 for free! It’s a great little portable HD with tons of space! What else could you ask for? For free?!?!

A few weeks ago I copied approximately 2.5TB to my new WD 3TB without any problem. I access the drive on a daily basic. It is connected to my MacBook via a powered USB 3 hub.

WD products are excellent, they have a long track record of being one of the best hard drive storage solutions whether in a portable drive or an internal OS drive. This Passport Ultra with 3.0 USB is blazing fast, I have it working with my backup solution, NovaBACKUP and have the best for fast backups and safe storage in case of a catastrophic disaster of hard drive proportion – I am covered. B&H provided awesome service, super fast shipping and look forward to doing business again, and again with them.

I own 2 WD External hard drives and have been very impressed with their performance. I purchased the 500GB My Passport Ultra for my granddaughter who is a semi-pro photog and was complaining that her photo editing programs were running in slo-mo. She had 3,000 jpeg’s stored in her pics library. Now she has most of her pic files stored on the My Passport Ultra and is overjoyed at the ease and speed she was able to transfer the files, we are both impressed with this Hard Drive.

You can rarely go wrong with a Western Digital. I have had alot of success with the 1TBs and I am sure that this 1.5TB will be just as good!
