If your Mac doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

This 5TB drive was purchased to replace a WD 2TB portal USB drive, which built-in encryption. The included USB Type-C to regular USB adapter is perfect, as it allows me to connect to my laptop using USB Type-C and my desktop using the converter/adapter. We use these to record mp4’s while we are webcasting. Then the drives are brought back and hooked to our Final Cut systems as sources. They perform flawlessly and quickly. We have probably 40 of these here. There 2 TB drives are on the way out I understand but are still a great drive and this was the best price around.

I partition these in half and am always using one of them wherever I go. One partition is allocated for Time Capsule backups and the second for backing up unedited RAW files for a given period. Once I fill up the 1gb partition allocated for unedited RAW files, I store the filled up drive and move on to a fresh drive. Having now used something like eight of these drives as described, I have not had a single problem in several years of using these drives. While they are not as fast as thunderbolt SSDs, these drives are plenty fast for my purposes and far more economical. I recommend them highly to anyone.

This Hard Drive now works well after I used the MAC utility in Catalina to remove undesired pre-instlled programs and then reformat the drive to APFS. The pre-instlled formatting came with confusing instructions and undesired functionality. For me, simple is good.

In addition to this particular 1.5TB WD drive that I bought recently, I have several WD external hard drives which I have used for backup and store photos during my nature photography trips to various locations. These drives have been 100% reliable for me for years. No failures, no issues. A 2TB Seagate backup plus that I bought recently is lighter and more compact though (I can’t comment on its relative reliability to the WD drive due to short time of use).
