Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I already had several WD hard drives, all working great. This one seems to be just as good. The only thing I was sort of expecting this time was a USB-C cable (3.1) instead of the standard USB, given that the new laptops will likely have USB C.

Bought 2 of these hard drives. One of them crashed the first day I tried to use it. The other one is still working but I won’t trust it with important files. Unfortunately, I am past the return period so I guess I am stuck with them.

As an owner of several WD MyPassport drives over about five years, I can say this 3TB drive does not fall short from the convenience, speed and reliability I have come to expect in previous models. I have traveled far and wide carrying MyPassport devices, and find them lightweight, compact, and fairly durable. Never had a hitch. This model is the exact same thickness as it’s 2TB predecessor, and seems to me slightly quieter. I find no major difference in external materials and construction, although I do think the top panel feels a bit more solid to the tap of the finger.

First off, I’m no computer expert. But I am an avid photographer. I’ve been wanting and needing a back-up for all the images I have stored on my desktop. It’s not the fastest drive, but it holds a lot of 1’s and 0’s. I use it for backup of big video files. It takes about twice as long to transfer to then a raided drive, but it’s also smaller and bus powered.
