Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I have a stack of WD externals, and they are tremendous. I did, however, learn an expensive lesson not long ago. I am a Mac guy, and you MUST dismount the HDs before unplugging. This may sound elementary, but a lot of people hot swap and if you are, you’re running full speed toward the cliff. I lost 2 months of work and a complete portrait session with Jerry Tarkanian. All lost and not recoverable due to HD crash caused by hot swapping. ALWAYS dismount your HDs on a Mac or you are asking for catastrophe.

it really is small for 5 tb. however, it is not a full 5tb, (its closer to 4.5) also, transferring from another external harddrive is slow. also, its not too fast to transfer 4gb directly from the hard drive in the computer.it could take a whole day to transfer that much info….

This portable hard drive is very versatile and portable. I’m using this drive to backup my photos. Originally I was using an external drive and a port for my backups, however, that’s extra wires and setup that I have to deal with. With the WD passport, I can easily just plug in and do what I need. The only issue is that it takes maybe 30 secs to a minute for the computer to recognize the drive. I also own an older version of the 2TB WD passport and that took way less time for the computer to recognize.

So far I’m really liking the drive. The size is decently portable and it does have quite a bit of space. It’s a tad slow, but somewhat expected for a drive of this class. I used the backup software which seems to run smoothly enough, but only time will tell if it works. I hope this will last me for quite a few years.

I have a morbid fear of losing my computer information. Just before I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I bought this, my 2nd passport so I have a duplicate backup. Plugged this newest passport in and it worked automatically and I now have peace of mind because of this.
