Expand the storage on your Mac and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 4TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your Mac doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

The WD 4 TB Passport Ultra Ext. Drive works great for using the Win 10 File History function. It has been in service for about 3 weeks and no problems have occurred.

I’m using the drive to hold the primary copy of my music. My primary music hard drive failed, so I copied my music from my backup drive to this drive. Performance was good during the copy. Hopefully the drive will last a long time.

I needed to replace my first photo backup external hard drive as it was over 5 years old. The Passport Ultra is a good because it run off the computer’s power. I had enough space left over to backup all my videos too!

I’ve been using WD bus powered drives for 15 years now and have always been very satisfied with them. I just bought a new MacBook Air which has USB-C ports and all my other drives are only USB 2.0. The My Passport Ultra fits the bill perfectly, with the faster USB 3.2 gen 1 over a USB-C connection. WD is nice enough to provide a type C to type A adapter so I can connect the drive to other devices that are type A only, but it is designed to interconnect only with the WD provided cable. Since cables can fail or get lost, I’d prefer a cable and adapter not requiring a proprietary interlock method. While the drive has very fast read and write sppeds, easily 5X what my USB 2.0 drives can do with my new MacBook, a side effect of that speed is it gets very warm during large transfers, like a backup. It’s obviously not possible to have venting like larger, AC powered drives. Small transfers do not heat it up as much. Overall, very satisfied, docked one star for the USB adapter and heat issues. I would recommend this drive despite those flaws.

Finally have a portable drive with enough capacity to back up all my images and files. Just wish it had the USB 3.1/Thunderbolt interface (vs. its USB 3.0) so the backup would be quicker.

Purchased 2 4 TB drives for use as Lightroom master and back up. Got everything transferred and recognized by LR. Today drive won’t mount. Checked the cables, etc. So glad I had a back up, but worry about the other new drive….

I’m using this product to back up my laptop computer as well as to store almost 1TB of Elevation Church sermons to watch weekly while serving overseas for the next 12 years as a missionary doctor. It stores and retrieves quickly, no glitches. I like the red color, but the surface doesn’t have little ventilation holes as it appears in the photo, they’re just part of the finish. If that’s all I can find wrong, then it must be a pretty good product. I purchased a small red Case Logic holder for it which was a perfect fit.

I have several (6 external and 4 internal) WD drives. I have some of other brands. I made my choice – WD: quick, large, reliable.

Updated from much older WD 1TB drive large box. The new My Passport is smaller, compact and runs well on USB. The Backup software works well for daily backups. Best feature, NO power supply needed, very portable, fast and ideal for archive backup.

My last several WD backup drives have failed within several months of purchase and cannot be repaired. It is possible that the reason is that I purchased from Amazon rather than B&H -Nevertheless I recommend you purchase a warranty plan

This is my 5th one. They are small for traveling and hold just enough. B&H has the drives at the best value

Quite a nice product

The 2x 2TB kit drives are the perfect solution for my archive needs. I use 1 for complete backups of 500GB main drive (SSD) and 1TB internal HDD; the other for ongoing photo and document backups. Along with an ongoing 4TB “live” backup of whole system these drives complete a reasonable backup strategy. These drives are really fast and have included USB 3.0 cables.

Very good size for hard drive.

The hard drive works great, formatted it when I got it and it’s been running perfectly. It’s not a big deal, but it’s a little thicker than it looks on the product images (just a heads up)

Use these to back up video and still files. have it set up with goodsync and all my files get backed up on a daily basis!
