Expand the storage on your Mac and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 4TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 4TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your Mac doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I bought the 500GB My Passport Ultra to back up two PCs. I don’t have any video files, raw digital photos or other types of files that consume a lot of disk space, so 500GB is way more than adequate for me. My needs exceeded the capacity of smaller thumb drives (8GB, 16GB), so I figured it was time to go for an extrnal HDD, especially since they’re now so small and relatively inexpensive. I paid almost as much for my first thumb drive (4GB) as I did for this 500GB portable HDD! The drive is small, fast and Windows 7 (64 bit) installed the necessry driver and had it ready for use very quickly. I didn’t install any of the software included on the HDD. I do not like using backup software like WD’s SmartWare that stores data in a proprietary format. I don’t care that it can save space; space is not an issue for me and reliable access to my data is paramont. I used Bvckup 2 (Yes, thats a ‘v’ not an ‘a’.), which is simple, quick and efficient, and I can access my files with anything that has a USB port and can read files stored in NTFS. As I’ve just started using it, I can’t speak for its reliability. But I’ve used WD HDDs in all of my computers since the late 1990s and have never had a problem, which is the primary reason I chose WD as my first portable HDD. As others have noted, you will probably want a longer USB 3.0 cable than the one packaged with this drive. I bought a 3′ Pearson from B&H and it seems to be a very good cable. And I will probably be purchasing a case smoetime soon.

No problems. It is quiet. I use it to back up a new Apple 13.3 MacBook Air M1 Chip with Retina Display using Time Machine. It works great and the backups are fast. I highly recommend it.

Bought this drive to backup 1.5TB of files. Quick easy startup with onboard files. Like the USB 3 functionality for added speed. No regrets.

Although I have dual backup hard drives attached to my PC, I have often worried about catastrophic events such as fire, flood, zombie attack, etc. The 500gb is large enough for me to backup my important stuff and even using it with a USB2 connection, it’s fast enough for my needs.

I use this for a bootable backup of my computer. I have several for different reasons. Always reliable. B&H has the best price/shipping.

Purchased as a backup to an external hard drive; will store remotely. Primary purpose will be photo storage and photo editing purposes in addition to home use applications.

I use this drive for back up of my 2TB RAID D drive. I works just fine though a little slow because it is a 5,200 RPM HD. Also, the WD software allows another back up, (2 more actually), to an external 2TB hdd from another Manufacturer. The – 1 star isn’t really fair because a small, portable drive like this has RPM limits and isn’t the same as a 3.5 in drive with a separate power source. Once the initial back up, in my case 1.6 TBs, has run, additional backing up isn’t an issue. I only use WD hdds because reliability with other manufacturer’s drives hasn’t worked out so well for me over the years. Nice, small, & really portable to easily take and use some where else. Quality is WDs usual excellent . WD also has the best customer service of all.

Works as expected, quiet, lightweight. I am a video editor/videographer and use this to help in keeping projects separate and not bogging down my PC by storing files on it that I need to keep long term.

I am using this to maintain a system back up of my Windows 10 desktop. It is fast and takes minutes to back up my entire C drive.

This hard drive is great for digital storage and computer backups. The bus-powered drive uses a USB 3.0 connection, which is fine for copying data, but will not be fast enough for editing video. But alas, that’s not what this is for. Physically, the drive is impressive to look at. Very compact with nice lines. The connections are sturdy as well. I use this drive for backing up my computer and storing large amounts of digital photographs, and it’s great for that. I use this drive with a MacBook Pro. it works fine, but you will need to reformat the drive before using it with Apple computers.

I’ve been using the 1tb model for a while and have been more than happy with it. as it nears the 3 year mark I picked this one up as my primary back up scratch disk and will be re-tiring the 1tb version to a 3rd string back up.

As always, I highly recommend WD external drives. I own than 20. When this is full, I’ve already bought a new drive to take it’s place. On a regular basis, I back up my digital files on three external WD drives; two portables that I carry with me, and a desk top.

I have a couple of these drives. They really come in handy for overflow storage when I need to be portable and they are also great as quick clone drives if you ever need to replace a drive. Not o big to keep handy.

First impressions… Compact and durable. It also looks nice and sleek with the metallic finish. Pretty self explanatory and easy to use, you just hook it up to the USB port and its up and running. No problems yet. Definitely worth it.

When debating to upgrade my 500 MB Passport I knew I was looking at at least 2 TB of storage and a USB 3.0 powered portable external hard drive.Like my other Passport, this is a solid build and will be connected to my laptop unless I need to take it somewhere. Very unobtrusive. Love the color. Not sure if for the extra money it’s worth the cloud storage, but it is slick.If you’re looking for benchmarks, here they are:———————————————————————–CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2 x64 (C) 2007-2013 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s Sequential Read : 111.920 MB/s Sequential Write : 107.535 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 40.201 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 55.535 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.534 MB/s 130.4 IOPS Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 1.324 MB/s 323.2 IOPS Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.582 MB/s 142.0 IOPS Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 1.358 MB/s 331.4 IOPS Test : 1000 MB G: 0.0% (0.4/1863.0 GB) (x5) Date : 2013/08/25 21:39:14 OS : Windows 7 Home Premium Edition SP1 6.1 Build 7601 (x64)I love having an external hard drive power through the USB port.
