Designed with SMB customers in mind, the 2TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from WD is well-suited for medium to large-scale NAS environments with up to sixteen 3.5" drive bays. Engineered to handle increased workloads, this 2TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 64MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, which all help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 164 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 600,000 load/unload cycles, < 1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, a workload rate of 300TB per years, dual-plane balance control technology, and 1 million hours MTBF for 8-16 bay NAS systems. The 7200 RPM speed of the drives has minimal impact on read and write times in a NAS set up for RAID 5 or RAID 6. It does have a big impact on drive temperature. I have a second enclosure that uses the standard Red drives and these drives run 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the Red Pro ones. The Red Pro get up to 115 degrees when performing a scrub of the RAID. In the future I will set up a RAID to use the Red and not the Red Pro drives.

If you are concerned about speed and the reliability of your data, then the Pro series is the one to buy. Per an article that was verified with both Western Digital and Seagate, for their non-pro lines they are using a recording scheme that write not only to the track being used, but the track above and below to squeeze more data onto a drive.

I swapped out 3TB Red drives for these 10TB Red pro drives. The traditional red drives were quieter but also slower (5400RPM vs 7200RPM). I went into the purchase knowing the pro drives would be noisier, and I was good with the decision. The storage space, speed, and warranty all make it a good choice.

I bought this same model, twice, at another online vendor (that starts with an A and has a letter Z in it) and somehow had both of those drives fail. So knowing and trusting B&H Photo not to sell some kind of B Stock I ordered from them and so far, so good!

Purchased 6 for my new qnap TS-653B. Installation was very simple. Turned unit on and all 6 drives were recognized. Set up raid and done. I got the Pro versions for the extra mtbf rating and extended warranty over the normal reds. Simply my personal choice. System is very quite with 6 drives in a QNAP TS-653B and the system is installed on a shelf in bedroom.

Title says it all. They are fast for spinning rust and use CMR.

They claim that these are optimized for NAS so if you are getting a hard drive for your desktop get the black series.

Not sure what kind of a review I’m supposed to give here… I’ve had these drives for about a week and they are still running. So that’s good. They are quite solidly built, the price is right, and I definitely needed the space. They do great as NAS storage, as well as data disks in a desktop computer. Just don’t boot from them, not that you can’t, just that it’s not the most efficient use of the disks. That’s all I’ve got.

I own three of these for my NAS and they work like champs.

Solid performing drive. Clear difference using 7200rpm in NAS but has to be both or all drives in RAID to gain full performance. Have had these drives for years with zero issues. Simply upgrading capacity from 3 to 6TB. Super fast shipping. B&H never disappoints.

I bought this after reading reports of problems with the 5400 rpm Red. Of course you don’t really know about things like this until many months have past.

Longer warranty means more piece of mind.

I have bought many hard drives from you. I trust you and have not had a problem with my product or when I call every one I have dealt with were so kind and helpful.

Fingers crossed on the replacement. Had the GOLD drives for a long time, did not have problem. This new Red Pro line quality is questionable…

These drives replaces the 4TB Seagate Red NAS drives I was using previously. The RAID array now has significantly faster read times and better video streaming as the read access time on these drives is better. That said, they are somewhat noisier than the Seagate drives, I can easily hear disk seeks from 3 feet away. The Seagate drives were pretty much silent. Write times using these drives appear to be longer (about 20 Mb/s slower) than the Seagate drives, but the faster reads make up for that in daily use.

I have been running these drives in a NAS for a little over 2 years. They have been very reliable. I purchased these additional drives to replace some 4 TB drives in the same NAS.

Needed more diskspace in my desktop for my growing collection of photos. I wanted something fast and multi TB. SSD are still too expensive for this purpose, so I settled on this. Installed it in my Dell 8920 (note: I had to buy a SATA cable). UserBenchMark then gave it some of the highest scores across all HDD, and almost double that of the built-in 1TB Seagate. Using LR Classic CC, it feels speedier when switching between photos.

Works as expected.

We recently moved and, during that move, my Drobo case, which contained 18TB of hard drives took a nose dive and stopped working…this was all my photos for the entire 21st Century! Luckily, I had everything backed up to Carbonite, but needed to get it back, so I went to B&H’s website, purchased a new Drobo and 3 8TB Drives. I needed the fastest drives I could get, so I ordered these. Since my Drobo is always on, I decided to get the NAS versions. I’m glad I did. My photos have been restoring for less than 2 weeks–I still have a long way to go–but I’m more than happy with this choice and will purchase more as the need arises.
