The WD Red Pro is my favorite for high demand situations such as servers and NAS. Be sure to get the Pro as it is far superior to the standard Red

Excellent!

I needed to increase the capacity of my NAS and check the server manufacturer’s compatibility list. The WD 8 TB Red Pro drive were the only Enterprise drives on the list for my NAS. I had been using Seagate drives in the past, but decided to give WD a try. The Pro line comes with a 5-year warranty, which helped seal the deal for me. I installed them one at a time, hot swapped them, to format and mirror the smaller drive already in the system. Once that was complete, I removed the smaller drive and installed the second WD 8 TB Red Pro drive to format, install the operating system and mirror all the files from the first disk. My NAS tells me everything is working fine. It has only been a week, but all seems good.

Added two 6TB RED 7200 RPM WD drives to our NAS. It was second set setup in RAID-1 format. Work, very well. No issues. Good response, and very easy to install. Would recommend anytime.

I bought it for the reputation of being reliable and the 5 year warranty. Bought a couple white label drives (@) and both died within a day.

Solid performing NAS drives

Not the fastest drive out there but I’ve never had one of these fail. Great for large backups.

I purchased this 16TB Hard Drive for my Synology NAS. I needed to expand my storage so I purchased 2 of these and 1 Ironwolf Pro 16TB. I am comparing this against several other drives I have both regular consumer and Enterprise class drives. Heat and Noise: Compared to Regular WD Red 10TB (Helium filled) these run a bit louder and a little hotter, but not as much as Enterprise class equivalents. I would not call them loud but they do make more noise than regular Helium Reds especially during writes. Under read loads they are about the same. After the hard drives arrived I plugged them into an external enclosure and ran a few check to make sure they were all good before trying to deploy them in my NAS. I ran crystalDiskInfo and ran my simple performance check which includes CrystalDiskMark and an 8Gig file copy to the HDD. WD Red Pro 16TB: Seq Read: 266 MB/s, Seq Write 264 MB/s, Copy 259 MB/s Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB: Seq Read: 278 MB/s, Seq Write 273 MB/s, Copy 80 MB/s Seagate EXOS 18TB: Seq Read: 291 MB/s, Seq Write 282 MB/s, Copy 258 MB/s WD Ultrastar HC550 18TB: Seq Read 269 MB/s, Seq Write 268 MB/s, Copy 274 MB/s WD Red Pro 18TB: Seq Read 267 MB/s, Seq Write 266 MB/s, Copy 260 MB/s WD Red Helium 10TB WD101EFAX: Seq Read 218 MB/s, Seq Write 219 MB/s Speed comparison for reference. This is just a small selection of my hard drives that I have owned and have tested. I am very happy with its performance. Yes I have quite a few HDD’s for primary and backup storage.

I use these in my Synology NAS, and they keep up with whatever’s thrown at them so far. Timely delivery, well-packaged product, works how I need it to.
Delmer Schneider (verified owner) –
Works as expected and received quickly. Great additional storage for Drobo.

Using in my Synology Diskstation. Dependable and have lasted a long time. B&H price much better than Amazon.

WD makes good drives. I trust these and only these in my NAS units.
Vernice Kertzmann (verified owner) –
These are very impressive HDDs that operate at 7.200 RPM and remain cool. Cool operating temperatures promote HDD life!

I’ve had two drives mirror for the last eight months in a NAS and no issues.

I bought two of them for my Synology NAS and they are fast , reliable and quiet. A little more expensive than the Normal Red model but the speed is noticeable.

Western Digital’s 7200RPM class drives are priced high, they’ve stood right by me as a customer for a long time which is why I’m willing to pay a premium for their drives, but it’s still a hard pill to swallow. Across the 30+ WD drives I’ve owned I’ve had only 1 fail on me, which they replaced under warranty. This is many magnitudes better than my experience with other big Hard Drive manufacturers where I’ve had much higher failure rates. For that reason and that reason alone I’ll continue to buy WD drives until they give me reason to reevaluate.

Run ok but get hot too quickly

Using 5 of these drives in a Drobo 5DT storage unit using RAID 5. Installed easily and all 5 worked right out of the box, and they run very quietly. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that they are expensive.

This is a great drive! I have 4 (so far) in my QNap TVS-871 in RAID-6. They installed without problem and seem to be working great! Excellent capacity and feature set for the price (the extra cache that comes with the 10TB is nice)! These drives are surprisingly quiet to me (I read other reviews that suggested the opposite, but I don’t really hear much noise at all). Solid drives! Hopefully they will last a long time!

Highly reliable NAS drive for servers.
