I ended up cancelling this order and going with the larger 6TB drives instead.

I recently added a WD Red 6TB to my Drobo 5N. I’m now replacing the old 3TB Green drives with these new Red Drives. They seem to work very well. Now that Drobo has increased the firmware to support up to 55.8 TB on a Drobo 5N this makes a terrific setup for photographers who need tons of space. When a drive goes bad and begins flashing amber just eject the old drive and slide in a new red drive and the Drobo will automatically rebuild itself. It just couldn’t be any easier than that. Maybe this is also a review for Drobo as well as Western Digital. 🙂

These are now selling for $0.95 more than the old model of this WD Red Pro 6TB drive with half the RAM on the drive and 9% lower throughput. The 7200 RPM provides 36% higher data I/O rates than the 5400 RPM drives and yet are still relatively quiet drives. For a NAS that is not going to be continually accessed the drive noise levels even in a 5 drive enclosure is minimal and my NAS is less than 3 feet from my desk. The higher I/O rate means that should a drive fail (and these have a 5-year warranty) the time to rebuild it will be much less than with either 5400 RPM drives or drives of greater capacity. With 5 of these in a NAS that is configured for RAID5 I get a total capacity with the formatted drives of a little over 21TB for a cost per TB of $55. The drives were shipped out by in factory packaging and not loose loaded as with some dealers. Expedited shipping though left a lot to be desired as it took 5 days to receive the drives.

WD Red Pro is always a solid, dependable drive.

I purchased 4 of these drives to install in an OWC Thunderbay raid tower. I currently have my raid set up as 1+0. I purchased these drives approximately a year ago and have had monitoring software constantly checking the health of the drives. So far, so good. They may not be quite as fast as solid state but these 7200rpm drives are fast enough for my needs. I’m mostly using them to archive files so they’re perfect for that. They are a bit noisy, but that’s to be expected since they’re industrial grade NAS drives designed to be used in a server room. I have the 4 drives sitting on my desk, while they are a bit noisy, the sound isn’t unbearable. The sound of them spinning is just a bit of piece of mind.

Bought 3 of these for a ReadyNAS 316. They work flawlessly, and have been running for about 2 weeks now. Highly recommend, in particular because of the 5 year warranty. These are really quiet too.

Paid a little extra for the better fault tolerance. Working fine in my Qnap 4 bay NAS.

I initially purchased 8 of these for my Sinology NAS. However, after the fact, I became concerned that they might add significant ambient noise to my environment. So, I returned all 8, and re-purchased only 1 of them to get a feeling for how loud they might be. As it turns out, the one drive is only slightly louder than the standard Western Digital Red NAS drives I currently have installed. The Red Pro drive is more chatty during read/write operations, but I can definitely live with it. It’s a fair compromise, considering the Red Pro provides 7200 RPM versus the Red at 5400 RPM. When I upgrade my Sinology NAS to a a 2015 model, I’ll definitely go with the Red Pro over the standard Red NAS drives.

I have been a IT professional for 2 decades, so I have used many drives from various manufacturers. Western Digital Red Pro drives are the most reliable with the highest MTBF among all the drives.

Using this as temporary storage while we build out a NAS for our video team. High quality cheap storage. WD drives have always done well for us.

Worked with not a single problem in my new Nas. Just plugged it in and off I went!

Put WD 4TB Red Pro in two bays of WD PR4100 NAS. Runs 3 times faster than the standard WD Reds that are in the other two bays. Great.

Bought four of these for NAS.

Ordered these bad boys for my Synology DS920 and I couldn’t be happier. I prefer WD Red Pro drives to the regular Reds, because they have a longer warranty (5 years). And their performance (read-write speeds) is really great too.

Ordered 2X ‘4-Pack’ WD 6TB Drives (8 total) & received 2 of them D.O.A.! No response from B&H….despite ‘Numerous’ attempts to contact/exchange. Stay Away!

Our Synology NAS is working well with these drives. No problems with them.

I purchased two of these for my new NAS, and they are working fine. A bit noisy when they are writing data, but that’s not an issue as the NAS sits on a shelf behind me, not on my desk.

This is my first time using WD drive. I used to use HGST but they got acquired by WD a few years ago so I have no other choice. The drive is dead on arrival. It would not spin and had loud clicking sound. I read a lot of bad reviews about WD Red Pro but I wanted to give them a chance. I do not recommend them especially if you are using it for NAS storage. I don’t believe the drive will last.

I’ve been using WD Red series HDDs for almost 10 years on my NAS units and have been very happy with the performance and reliability. When I received a report that one of the 4 drives was dying after almost 10 years, it made sense to install the latest version of WD Red. As I expected, I slipped it into it slot and it booted right up and was at home immediately with the other disks in my RAID 5. I would recommend this product to anyone needing a very reliable drive with an excellent operational life.
