Not sure what kind of a review I’m supposed to give here… I’ve had these drives for about a week and they are still running. So that’s good. They are quite solidly built, the price is right, and I definitely needed the space. They do great as NAS storage, as well as data disks in a desktop computer. Just don’t boot from them, not that you can’t, just that it’s not the most efficient use of the disks. That’s all I’ve got.

I have an older WD External RAID drive it worked well for 6 years and one drive failed. Replaced with a like model off Amazon, the 2nd shorty failed, replaced it too. One of the replacements died shortly; that when I found it had never been used but was mfg 6 years previously; new but not new and no one would honor the “warranty”. This drive was ordered with the hope it would work in the 6 year old RAiD setup. I inserted it into the drive, and it started rebuilding to match the other drive without me having to do anything more. A couple of days later the 4TB of photo files was duplicated, I am very satisfied. I’m a retired engineer, but don’t have a computer background, but the description provided by B&H gave me the confidence to give it a try, I’ll order a 2nd one to replace the other new but old drive too!

I have bought many hard drives from you. I trust you and have not had a problem with my product or when I call every one I have dealt with were so kind and helpful.

Purchased 2x 16TB WD161KFGX (36 dBA seek avg, 20 dBA idle) Replaced 2x 10TB WD101EFAX (38 dBA seek avg, 34 dBA idle) Used in my Synology NAS for backups. During idle the new drives are quieter than my previous ones. Read is probably just as quiet. But writes are pretty noisy. By the specs these should be a hair quieter – and maybe technically they are – but something about the quality of the seek / write clicks is much more distracting than the quality of the noise from the 10 TB Reds (CMR, later rebranded Red Plus). It’s noisy enough that I’m considering putting my Synology on a power schedule so it’s not bothering me during work hours. This NAS is in a small home office with mostly Apple equipment. To understand the noise levels I expect, I replaced the Synology system fan with a Noctua and can still hear it, but it’s a more acceptable level. I wanted to move up to 16TB and I’m willing to pay for 5-year-level warranty from Pro, but now I’m wondering if I should’ve waited for a 16TB Red Plus if WD pays more attention to noise quality on this.

Bought 3 of these for a ReadyNAS 316. They work flawlessly, and have been running for about 2 weeks now. Highly recommend, in particular because of the 5 year warranty. These are really quiet too.

Like any technology, these will be cheaper in 6 months, but this was the best price on the 6TB WD RED PRO drives, so I got 2 of them use in my 4-drive Thunderbolt Enclosure and my Mac. The RED PRO is a 7200rpm drive, and I think that’s necessary when you are using 2-drive stripes or mirrors for video editing. I was able to replace a pair of 1TB drives that were used as a backup boot drive, and now I have 5TB of extra mirrored space to store video projects. My other Video drive is 2TB of mirrored space, so this more than double that. When this is all full, I will replace the 2TB drives with 2 more of these and then hopefully that will last me a while.

Runs warmer and a little noisier than than the basic red nas, but, worth it for the speed and warranty.

Good drive designed for use in a NAS enclosure with multiple hard drives. For only $0.95 more per drive you can buy the newer model of the WD Red Pro 6TB hard drive that has double the cache memory and a higher sequential read rate.

These are the best NAS drives I have used. Period.

They claim that these are optimized for NAS so if you are getting a hard drive for your desktop get the black series.

The Red Pro drives are solid built and strong performing. They offer greater reliability than standard desktop drives, though at a higher price point.

This is my first time using WD drive. I used to use HGST but they got acquired by WD a few years ago so I have no other choice. The drive is dead on arrival. It would not spin and had loud clicking sound. I read a lot of bad reviews about WD Red Pro but I wanted to give them a chance. I do not recommend them especially if you are using it for NAS storage. I don’t believe the drive will last.

Works good, I like it.

I had zero issues with installation and initialization. I’m using two in a ioSafe 218 NAS (two-bay diskless). I’ll update if I have any issues down the road, but so far so good.

I initially purchased 8 of these for my Sinology NAS. However, after the fact, I became concerned that they might add significant ambient noise to my environment. So, I returned all 8, and re-purchased only 1 of them to get a feeling for how loud they might be. As it turns out, the one drive is only slightly louder than the standard Western Digital Red NAS drives I currently have installed. The Red Pro drive is more chatty during read/write operations, but I can definitely live with it. It’s a fair compromise, considering the Red Pro provides 7200 RPM versus the Red at 5400 RPM. When I upgrade my Sinology NAS to a a 2015 model, I’ll definitely go with the Red Pro over the standard Red NAS drives.

I have eight of these drives in a Synology DS3617xs with room for more. I have trusted Western Digital drives to store my data for years and never had a problem. These Pro series drives are designed for larger NAS systems and have been performing perfectly without any issue since they were installed. Expensive, yes, but I wouldn’t trust my data to anything else in a large array.

Using it with a Synology NAS. No problems.
Xzavier Bartoletti (verified owner) –
We use these drives in Synology and other NAS devices. They are the best balance today of performance and price. We have had no problems to date with the many we’ve purchased.

Easy to install, haven’t had it very long but so far works well
