Designed with SMB customers in mind, the 18TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from WD is well-suited for medium to large-scale NAS environments with up to sixteen 3.5" drive bays. Engineered to handle increased workloads, this 18TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 512MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, which all help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 272 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 600,000 load/unload cycles, 10 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, a workload rate of 300TB per years, dual-plane balance control technology, and 1 million hours MTBF for 8-16 bay NAS systems. Shock protection is provided by a multi-axis shock sensor and WD’s NASware 3.0 helps increase system compatibility, allowing Red Pro drives to be more easily integrated with your existing network infrastructure.

These are now selling for $0.95 more than the old model of this WD Red Pro 6TB drive with half the RAM on the drive and 9% lower throughput. The 7200 RPM provides 36% higher data I/O rates than the 5400 RPM drives and yet are still relatively quiet drives. For a NAS that is not going to be continually accessed the drive noise levels even in a 5 drive enclosure is minimal and my NAS is less than 3 feet from my desk. The higher I/O rate means that should a drive fail (and these have a 5-year warranty) the time to rebuild it will be much less than with either 5400 RPM drives or drives of greater capacity. With 5 of these in a NAS that is configured for RAID5 I get a total capacity with the formatted drives of a little over 21TB for a cost per TB of $55. The drives were shipped out by in factory packaging and not loose loaded as with some dealers. Expedited shipping though left a lot to be desired as it took 5 days to receive the drives.

aside from the product being awesome. I am in Australia and for me the value and time out reached any thing I could have purchased in Australia. Even with duty, taxs and exchange rate it was cheaper and delivered in record time

This WD new big 5TB Red drive! They have another 6TB Red, but it only has 64mg buffer, this bad boy has double or 128mg buffer. Also this drive comes with the same warranty as their back drives, 5 years! The is quick and quiet. Designed to run in a NAS or Server. I need more space and this was the drive I was looking for.

I bought 4 of these discs and put them in a OWC enclosure. Works fine so far.
