This 8TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 256MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, all of which help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 263 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 300,000 load/unload cycles and <1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read. Also built into this drive are WD’s StableTrac and Dynamic Cache Technology to help increase reliability and optimize performance.

The HTPC I am running had (2) 1.5TB WD Green drives that had a been re-used on a couple computer builds. The age of the drives may result in data loss so replacing the drives was a smart move. The 1.5 TB drives have moved to data back-up. A single drive to replace (2) drives is a great advantage.

Very fast but a little noisy. I added pads to the feet of the drive case to quiet the transmission through the desktop and it quieted down quite a bit.

I highly recommend the WD black series drives. I own three that have been periodically buying over the years as I need space and none have had any issues yet. This drive is great for multimedia storage and is reliable enough to edit on. It helps that they come with a 5 year warranty from WD. Statistically these have a much lower fail rate than other brands and series of drives, worth the extra cost for the longevity.

I shoot a lot of video, mostly in ProRes422, which takes a lot of space. I record to an SSD then copy the video to a hard drive like this, for editing and archiving the project. I use these in a 5 drive enclosure, and rotate them as one fills up (which doesn’t take long). I don’t recycle the drives, except for data recovery, but keep them in archival plastic boxes for future reference. With a dozen or so projects on a disk, some active, and frequent revisits for clients, it’s impractical to reuse the discs anyway. I used to archive to BD discs, but it takes 5-6 to backup a 128 GB SD card, much less a 2 TB SSD (3-14 hours of video).
