This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 300,000 load/unload cycles and <1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read. First, I recommend the version with retail packaging since it offers some extra protection during the shipping process. This is a good and speedy HDD by a highly regarded manufacturer. I have just installed it as the replacement C: drive in my desktop and reloaded it from a system image. It is noticeably faster than the WD 1TB green drive it replaces. My only hesitation (at the cost of one star in an otherwise perfect recommendation) is that it is somewhat noisy–much noisier than the near silent disk it replaced or the WD 1.5TB spare drive I have along side it in the case. It sounds similar to an old geiger counter in the movies. The noise isn’t alarming or obtrusive, particularly, but if you have your tower on top of your desk as I do, you might think of moving it under your desk.

Once my trouble shooting convinced me that the secondary internal hard drive had to be replaced, I ordered the WD internal DRV from B&H. It arrived quickly and I installed it in a few minutes. The 4TB gave me a lot of space to move caches, backups, and seldom used programs from the (C:) drive into the (D:) drive. No more red warnings about running out of space in the former.

I must say that the price B&H was offering this product is less, or same, as OEM bare drives. This was probably my first retail platter drive purchase in almost a DECADE! This is massive storage, massive buffer and is working great for a drive to store games on. This drive replaced a 5TB WD black drive that was about (5) years old with a lot of hours. In order to prevent significant loss of data I try to replace drives with a lot of hours on them. The drives are then rotated to emergency back up use. This was a great drive at a great price. Nice and quite in the case as well. (NAS drives don’t have sound concerns so being next to the PC with a NAS drive may be noisy)

I use two each for my two machines. I bought a 5th to use in a HD enclosure to back up a laptop. I only have SATA II (3Gb/s)but the drive can be jumpered into that mode which eliminates overhead from transation, thus performing better when SATA II connected. It is also a 1 platter drive reducing wear on the spindle and must have greater areal density than equal sized multi-platter drives…Areal density is a measure of the quantity of information bits that can be stored on a given length of track, area of surface, or in a given volume of a computer storage medium. Generally, higher density is more desirable, for it allows greater volumes of data to be stored in the same physical space. Density therefore has a direct relationship to storage capacity of a given medium. Density also generally has a fairly direct effect on the performance within a particular medium, as well as price. With a five year warranty this was a great buy and was retail boxed. First time I’ve seen a retail boxed drive in ages. In 25 years of building my own and machines for others I’ve had only one WD drive fail and trust me, I’ve run dozens of them under very demanding circumstances.

WD 6TB Black – November 2020… I have been using Western Digital Black HDD since they first offered them. Never had a problem. I have not had any die on me, I replace them after 5 years. This month 11/2020, B+H had the best price, free shipping, no sales tax. I bought four (4) 6 TB to replace 5+6 year old and smaller HDDs. I look forward to when WD has 6 TB SATA SSDs and B+H sells them at the best price.

The Western Digital 1TB Desktop Performance Caviar Black HDD Retail Kit (WD1003FZEX) is a quality internal computer hard drive. The B&H store sells this drive at a very reasonable price, and provides fast shipping. I’ve used it on a refurbished desktop computer and expect to get over five years of service. I plan on purchasing more of these dives to provide a second data drive and a portable external hard drive this I can depend on. There are no negatives about this drive.

The only reason it doesn’t get a five is because there aren’t any real instructions for cloning and the web site for downloading the free software is obtuse. You would think WD would have a wealth of easy to follow instructions and video, but I found it to be pretty useless.
