When paired with an SSD for a dual-drive configuration, you’ll further benefit from the caching of your OS onto the SSD for increased performance.
This 8TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 256MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, all of which help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 263 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 300,000 load/unload cycles and <1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read. Also built into this drive are WD’s StableTrac and Dynamic Cache Technology to help increase reliability and optimize performance.

I was a bit concerned about PWL noise issue that some users have reported, but this model seems to be free of it. It does run a bit warm but it will sit directly in an airflow path in my case so I’m not expecting any issues. I’m letting it run non-stop in a dock while I copy files to it over the next few days and then into the computer it goes (joining 3 other Blacks).

I have owned many WD Black drives over the years and have never had any problems with them. This drive is very quiet and I noticed a speed increase because of the larger cache. It’s almost to the point of not noticing a speed decrease compared to my SSD’s. Not to say my SSD’s aren’t faster but I don’t mind the wait. Would definitely recommend this drive.

I have always had good luck with Western Digital Drives. I have only had this one for a few months so I can’t really talk about longevity, but the WD Black drives seem to be some of the best made drives and have the longest warranty (5 years) that I have seen. I doubt you can do better, and the small extra cost over the consumer grade drives with 2 or 3 warranties is worth the peace of mind to me. Of course, even with a very nice hard drive, always back-up your data!

Western Digital Blacks are great hard drives. Great for storage. When this package arrived, it came in a bigger box with other stuff that I had ordered from here. No bubble wraps to protect any of the products inside. This was not a good thing. Hard drives are easily damaged if it were to bounce around during shipping. Geezes, don’t cheap out on packing now. Luckily, it still worked.

I was in need of replacing an aging 5TB hard drive used for games on a computer. I have got int he habit of replacing hard drives PRIOR to failure. I lost some critical data off a back up drive that was aging. I quite enjoyed the fact that B&H offers a RETAIL drive for less than the costs of a BARE OEM drive offered by the competitors. Speeds of drive are great, no crazy sounds, quite and efficient.

B&H service – great! When I register these HD at WD site I get warranty till January 2024! This is one month more then 3 Years! All WD Blacks have 5 YEARS WARRANTY! Even in Q and A -one of answer said 5! not 3! What is going on?!

Out of all the internal hard drives I have had over the years the Western Digital Black drive has exceeded my expectations in reliability and performance for a mechanical drive. Most hard drives I usually get last about 3 years before I start having trouble. I had the 4TB WD Black drive for a little shy of 6 years before it started giving me problems. This drive was both a replacement drive and an upgrade in storage capacity. Yes I would highly recommend the drive.
