The device itself is fine, I’m sure, but holy cow OS5 is 100% absolute garbage. Coming from OS3 where everything is relatively user-friendly and you can use your device however you want, OS5 is excruciatingly bad. You can’t transfer anything other than photos and videos from your phone, and if you transfer something to your phone you 1) Don’t get to decide where it’s saved, and 2) Have to deal with the fact that the OS will rename the file to a completely random string of alphanumeric characters. I will be returning this device after having it hooked up for less than a day and will be purchasing a NAS from a competitor that respects the fact that different people want to use storage devices for different purposes. I absolutely cannot recommend that ANYONE buy this product.

Used to the product and its features. I like the functionality of a personal cloud a lot as it makes ease of access to your data easy and secure.

My previous WD My Cloud 2 TB drives used to transfer data between them at 45MB/s or less. I have had 92MB/s transfer rate between my 2 new 4TB MyCloudEX2Ultra drives using RAID 1 our of the box. My router is a Netgear RAX80. I am very happy with thiss upgrade.

Good luck actually getting one. Mine has been on order for 4 weeks and nothing yet. My review is not based on actually using the equipment.

I was forced to purchase a replacement for MyCloud due to the non-continuance of support for it. Setting up the Ultra was easy. What has been troublesome for a non techhie like me is moving the data from the MyCloud to the Ultra seamlessly. I tried tech help, community and I have resolved myself to doing it 1 file at a time.

I have been using WD NAS/cloud drives for many years. While there were initially some issues with the original EX2 the EX2Ultra did not show these. I do not use them as personal cloud servers, but purely as a NAS (RAID1) and a second unit as a backup drive – WD allows EX2 to EX2 backup or one can use a backup utility on the PC. Reliable and cost effective for my purpose

I bought two My Cloud EX2 Ultra servers about 8 years ago. They are 8TB each, both configured as RAID-1, giving me 4TB each. One is our “Media” server, used to store photos, videos, movies, and music. The other is our “Resource” server, used to store documents, e-books, articles, PowerPoint presentations, virtual machines, and databases. My wife and I travel a lot and we wanted all our files to be available locally and also to be stored securely. These two servers have now travelled with us all over the world, packed securely in my rollaboard suitcase. They have been jostled, dropped, chipped, and scratched. Several rubber feet are missing, and the case on one of them is warped so that the lid pops open all the time. Despite all of this rough handling, they have been amazingly reliable, providing us with peace of mind that our precious files are protected by mirroring. As it happens, one of the drives recently started giving errors, but the mirror drive is still active. I will be replacing both servers sometime soon and I’m hopeful that WD is still making robust servers that will withstand our rough and tumble lifestyle.

My Cloud Expert Series EX2 Ultra is used with my Apple to back up all files on my iMac and my Apple desk top wirelessly. It is set up to automatically back up every hour. So far it has worked perfectly. I would recommend this product to computer users.

Fast, reliable and easy to setup.

The idea is wonderful. The execution is inconsistent, unfortunately. The performance is as expected, when it works. The WD software (on MacOS) is unreliable and frustrating. Wouldn’t recommend it for frequent, incremental backups.

The drive is easy to set up, but linking all the computers is another story. When I called the helpdesk I got someone who spoke very broken English and very difficult to understand. I need to call back because I am not getting errors telling me my drive is full. I only have 500 gigs on my laptop, so how can it be full after not even loading 1/2 of what is on my laptop to a 8TB drive? Crazy!

Good NAS Server. Has all the features that you would expect from a home office NAS. Good Media Server Ability to access remotely and easily within network Good backup and sync capabilities Faster Transfers (depending on the drives used)

So easy to hook up. Pretty much just plug and play and it worked without a hitch. Only have had it for a short time but so far it’s been great. Ask me again in a year or 2.

My daughter purchased this item about 6 months ago and loves it. Recently, I found one of my many external hard drives was about full and needed another so I decided it was time to go the NAS route. I did extensive research, as did my daughter, and came up with this unit being the best. I really love it. I purchased the 16TB unit which comes configured as RAID 1 (mirror) which is what I wanted. Remember, this gives you a total of 8TB. I downloaded WD’s SmartWare and when it recognized the NAS, I got a message that I qualified for a free update for their SmartWare Pro (normally $20 upgrade). I use this software which continuously updates my two internal hard drives except e-mail which updates once per week. When I transferred files from an external hard drive, I had to plug it into (USB) the back of the NAS and had to use the software (Dashboard) that came with the NAS for that transfer. This unit was easy to set up and runs flawlessly.

I bought this to replace a MyCloudMirror that does not support OS5. I tried to copy the Mirror to the EX and was disappointed in finding certain files whose names were not supported by the new OS. As a result I spent almost 36 hours to transfer 1.5TB. Also the EX automatically sets up as a two drive clone. Therefore the useful disk size is half of what you buy.

This is a follow-up to my previous review. To get great speed, I needed to change the Max SMB Protocol from SMB 2 to SMB 3. To make this change, it is found under Settings Network Windows Services Max SMB Protocol. I now upload 12GBHD videos in under 2 minutes with a wired Ethernetconnection.

The unit was pretty easy to set up on my LAN, however the software for backing up my laptop keeps failing and I haven’t had the time to contact support yet.

After setting it up and spending 40 hours copying 1.5GB … I found it to be very S L O W. I tried everything to increase copy speed. I bought Thundebolt to Gigabit dongle, USB3-to Gigabit dongle… I’m sure it does the job fine for a family with small photo files but my 229MB Tiffs took forever. It is supposed to work with Mac Time Machine but never did…after much research I learned I needed to reformat it to HFS+ which I was going to try but I’m now waiting 5 hours for it to restore to factory defaults. I will be selling it and replacing it with a 6TB USB3/Thundebolt drive.

Setup was easy. Copying all my files to MyCloud from my aged retiring NAS was easy. MyCloud is running just fine so far. (I put in two WD Red Pro drives). Performance seems pretty snappy: in any case, noticeably faster than my old NAS, but I haven’t had a chance to compare it with other NAS.
