It is a shame that WD continues to depend on SMB technology since Microsoft barely supports it and advises against its use. The amount of time it took me to get this installed and usable was unacceptable. Once I managed to install all the extra services and get everything setup, the drive is working well and seems to perform much better than the one it is replacing.

The NAS was set up to support a HP desktop, HP laptop and Dell laptop. Hardware implementation was a challenge because the only literature provided is a simple card with 3 steps on how to attach the NAS. I am very proficient with computers but this was my first foray into setting up a NAS. Using the Dashboard as Western Digital recommends was not straightforward. A number of steps both forward and backward occurred before I finally got the NAS installed. Please note that I did download the manual and read through it but the information was not as helpful in the installation. The biggest issue and why I feel like giving this a 2 star versus a 4 star rating was the WD Sync software. The hardware deserves a 4-5 star but the installation and the WD Sync software drop it to a 3-4. The software is great in synchronizing the files for all three computers but if you install the NAS with a dynamic IP, the WD Sync is not smart enough to know that the IP address can change. So, for example, I installed the NAS on a Netgear router with a dynamic IP address of XXX.XXX.X.8. The next day, the Netgear assigned it XXX.XXX.X.9 and now the WD Sync software can’t find the NAS! Fortunately, I found a hint on a forum and once I set up the NAS on a static IP address of XXX.XXX.X.8 WD Sync worked just fine. Based on comments I searched online, this is an issue affecting numerous users and it has happened for awhile. Why WD Sync has not been revised is unacceptable. This is a great unit and I’m very pleased with it but installation and set up is not for the faint of heart. It can be worked through easily but it won’t be straightforward if you have more than once computer. Finally, I have not yet set up the sharing (DLNA) but will do so in the future. Hopefully, that doesn’t result in any new software surprises.

I want to love it… but it keeps disconnecting. Even when I directly connect to my Macbook, I keep getting this error message saying it does not exist. I have to keep hard resetting for it to be able to show up and access my files. For the amount of money I spent ($1000+ YIKES) I would expect it to be near flawless.

I often have problems just logging in to manage this device. So far it seems to store files okay but I feel like I’m constantly fighting with it. I’m a Mac user and had one successful TimeMachine upload (over a wired network). Since then, TimeMachine updates have failed (wired and wi-fi). I may have better experience if I can get it upgraded to the new MyCloud OS 5 but I’m not optimistic.

Purchased this NAS to replace an 11 year old WD My Book World Edition that had a drive failure. I was very impressed with the ease of setup, the instructions were clear, I read the instruction guide online prior to receiving the unit so that I had a “feel” for what I needed to do to get up and running as soon as the unit arrived. I really enjoy the convenience of being able to access ALL of my files while on the go…the iTunes server is also very cool, I am able to connect my phone to my car via Bluetooth then access my music files on the WD My Cloud and play my music collection while driving, how cool is that! The IOS App for my iPhone and iPad make using the NAS very simple as well. I set up my device in the Raid1 configuration so short of fire or flood my data should be protected forever. The price was right when I started comparing the cost of Cloud services that give you storage space but very little control of your data. I have already recommended this device to several friends.

Cost and Benefits, This ways you can mesure the result for this external storage. Definitely it is not the best one but if you not a pro this storage is more tha enough. I recommend you.

Bought this to replace my EX2 which stopped working with TimeMachine. The Ultra has a different firmware and was hoping it would solve my problem – no luck. I still like it but had to purchase Carbon Copy Cloner to get my backups working.

It takes a while to figure out how to use this NAS but it was well worth the study time. I got the 16 TB model that comes with two 8 TB drives in Raid 1 configuration; so 8 TB of useable storage. I have copied music mp3’s and hour long mpeg recorded TV shows to the NAS. Windows and Ubuntu clients can easily access and play the media. NFS shares can be activated and used from Linux. Makes for a great way to backup files using tar. Another great feature are the http and p2p apps which can download files in the background without the need to have a computer running. I have only had it a few weeks but I am very happy with the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra. My plan is to eventually move all my data and media files from my desktop to this NAS. And someday I may use it with the HDHomeRun DVR.

This is an excellent storage solution for our needs. We need reliable backups for a few computers and a network attached storage device is what was called for. There are many NAS solutions out there. This particular device had (1) plenty of storage: (2) two removable drives; (3) drives already installed and (4)RAID 1 protocol. The RAID 1 protocol was important because it mirrors one disk to the other making essentially two copies of the data. If one fails, the other has all the good stuff. It also has lots of other features for streaming and internet attachment, bit I was not interested in that stuff. Setup was quick, hook it up, plug it in, wait for the lights to stop blinking then go to a web site for setup. Being a complete computer ignoramus, I was a little baffled by some things, but finally got the device recognized on all the computers. Since I only wanted to utilize its NAS capabilities, I found the public folder, made some subfolders for backups and let it fly. We have some backup software that we like, and that worked flawlessly with this NAS. Bottom line for me, this was exactly what I was looking for and now after a couple weeks of use without problems, I like it a lot.

So far so good. Seems to be a bit slow sometimes but it may just be the app.
