It doesn’t store the media based on the date it was taken or created but instead based on the date it was uploaded…. you can imagine the pain in the butt this creates when searching for older information.

Quite easy to install and configure. So far everything works in a timely manner, and I will explore all its capabilities shortly. The interface is similar to the old EX2 but is an improvement. Much cheaper than subscribing to several “clouds” to store photos, videos, backups, etc. I want everything accessible.

This is the third WD NAS I have owned and have had no issues at all with any of them. Each gets better than the prior one, especially the OS and UI. Very fast and stable. Over the last 40 years, I’ve tried a number of other HD manufacturers and found that WD is hands down the best.

I could no longer tolerate the time it took to backup my SSD video capture cards to a USB Raid Enclosure. I have use WD RAID cabinets for many years and know the software. So I decided to get the empty box and put a pair of 16TB drives in it. The 10TB RAID 1 array I have in my editing computer was at capacity. The transfer speed over a network more than tripled what I was getting across USB 3. On location I carry a router so USB is not a limitation, I can run 1000GB ethernet with a power cord and a few cables. One drawback. this is not a hot swap system. In fact, it does not like to have the disks changed. The good news, it works, the bad news, you better know what you are doing. There is no on/off switch. You must unplug it, swap in a new drive pair, then plug it back in. It takes some time for it to recognize the new drives. You must wait until the power light goes solid blue and the drive lights go red. About 5 minutes. Then with the administration software tell it the drives are ok to use. Then your back in business. The real beauty, it has two USB 3 ports. I plugged in an Atomos drive dock and transferred the dailies directly to the server. it took 1 hour to copy 450 GB from an SSD to the server. Depending on your production requirements, and your passion for backup files, I can see having one of these for each camera on the shoot.

This is the sixth of these that I have installed and find it reliable and easy to maintain. When a drive wore out, the indicator lights identified which one to extract and swap for a new drive. The system automatically reconstructed the mirror.
