I thought the drive arrived DOA, it was a bad USB cable. I’d advise anyone to check everything before returning what they may think is a DOA. I saved myself a lot of aggravation and time by trying another cable. It’s quicker to check the manufacturer’s support site than boxing up and returning an item.

I purchased this drive to replace a WD My Book drive (1TB) that had been performing beautifully with SmartWare Pro, WD’s software for setup and management of the drive. In setting up the new drive, I was asked to submit an authorization code to add the Smartware Pro. In fact, I was to learn that the software was no long offered for Elements drives and I should not have been asked for an authorization code as none is required icw setup. After several email exchanges with tech support which were worthless, I finally connected on the phone with a rep who explained that, as I’m using Windows 10, I should be using the Microsoft backup software. My question is why WD doesn’t include such information in their marketing AND in the set-up material which is nothing more than 3 simplistic diagrams on how to connect the drive to the computer and a wall outlet. The drive works fine (4 stars). WD support a single star at best.

Nothing fancy here but does the job. I just use it to copy my photos, videos and music too.

Small, compact, good value. Will probably get another one.

Easy to set up. Cheaper than My Book. Only disappointment is that on/off switch is inconveniently on back

I use the drive primarily for streaming media. I purchased this drive to replace the same size Seagate drive that only lasted 6 months before a lot of my media started to get corrupt from bad sectors.

I have now qty-3 HDs I use as backups for my photos, video and important files. I just added this 6TB to my fleet of qty-2 4TB HDS. I give this 5 stars both for this new 6TB HD as well as the good luck I’ve had with the same family of HD in the 4TB size. BTW- You can NEVER have too many backup copies of your once in a lifetime family photos, videos, etc. I had a backup HD (different brand than WD) crash last week… it was 10 years old and sat in my safe not powered up or spinning most of the time but still failed. 3 full backups is -not- overkill considering you can get a decent 6TB drive for around $150 or so bucks. I keep qty-2 in the fire safe and qty-1 on my desk.

I use this to store music files. It’s so easy to connect & use. I’ve already recommended it to a friend!

Pretty good product. No problems with it thus far. I purchased this hard drive to replace an old WD My Book external hard drive that was crapping out. I wasn’t looking for a hard drive with so much storage space but the deal I got on this unit was too good to pass up. I essentially got an extra 1 TB of storage space for the price that other 1 TB units cost. The set-up was easy, it’s quite, requires no fuss and it’s simple to transfer files to my new hard drive. It doesn’t run hot, it’s barely warm to the touch. Hard to tell it’s even on because it’s so quite and there is a small light at the back of the drive that flashes when being used. I suppose it would be nice to have an on/off switch so that it’s not on all the time. A small light at the front of the unit might be nice also. All in all, this hard drive has been a good purchase so far. No real complaints. Glad I made the purchase.

this unit is without a dout the strongest and easist unit you could buy.

This is a terrific external hard with a lot of storage. If you want to back up 3 or 4 home computer’s data, this is the storage solution for you! I would have given this product 5 stars if the drive were a little faster and if the advertising department at B&H and WD would have disclosed that this is really a 1.81 TB harddrive, since your computer counts in binary, not in base ten, but oh well.

Works great with Mac. Plug and play!

I have two of them. Easy to plug on Windows. It comes pre-formated. It is also very quiet, which is nice. I used both of them for a few weeks and so far they are excellent.

My main media drive. My second WD Elements. So far so good.
Braden Braun (verified owner) –
Perfect for storage, and very very quiet. I formatted as exFat for use on Mac and PC and works flawlessly so far! Will not use it for video editing, just for all media storage.

I have had good luck with WD in the past. So far, this one is working like a champ. I hope to have it for a long time for all my backups. I also received good and timely shipping from B&H. Great experience, will buy from them again.

Got a good price shucked them (white label) added them to my Synology box at home, the Synology box is low use for portable hard drive backups and an occasionally used as a media server so not enough of a strain to be concerned about performance,

The great thing about the 2TB Elements Hard Drive is that it works really well with a Mac. There aren’t many steps involved in getting the hard drive compatible with Mac’s time machine. I use this product to back up all the material on my laptop which is quite full since I am always doing video projects. I cannot say that there are any bad things about this hard drive. Also the price for this hard drive is a steal. I thought I would have to spend a lot more money on finding a hard drive that is compatible with the Mac but instead I felt I got a bargain when I purchased the 2TB Elements external hard drive. I would recommend this hard drive to anyone who has a Mac.

I needed an external drive to keep footage off my computer’s internal drive, and this one does just the trick. It lives beside my monitor and I just switch it on whenever I need it. It’s got a small enough footprint that it’s never in the way, and I don’t really even notice it at this point. My only gripe is the power button-I wish it was a hard on/off switch. It’s a little annoying to reach around and feel for the button to turn it on or off, and if I keep the USB plugged into my computer, the drive will randomly turn on every now and then. I now keep it unplugged when I’m not regularly using it, which means I have an extra step to do every time I want to access my files. Would have been perfect if I could have kept it plugged in, and simply switched it on whenever I needed it.
