Preformatted NTFS for systems running Windows 10, 8.1, or 7, the 14TB Elements Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD provides users with up to 14TB of add-on storage for their photos, videos, music, documents, and other files. It features a 5 Gb/s micro-USB 3.0 interface, which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1, and is compatible with 480 Mb/s USB 2.0. It is powered using an 100-240 VAC power adapter, is formatted NTFS for Windows, and includes a USB cable.

I use this drive to store my iTunes media on. It holds 1.25 TBs of audio and movies which is shared to several Macs and Apple TVs. So far so good not a hic up … I love the size makes it some what portable and easy to transport when I want to take my 1 TB movie collection to a friends to watch. Bout the only thing I don’t care for is the power cord not always easy to find a plug for the block plugs. Over all excellent drive easy to setup … Just formated it for my macs and loaded my media on it and use it.

I use this device to backup thousands of photographs and gigs of data. It truly doesn’t get any easier than this. I am able to quickly connect the device, transfer files, disconnect, and pop the device into a fireproof safe.

Using the USB 3.0 capabilities makes this hard drive really fast. It is a bit larger than the WD Elements 1 and 1.5Tb drives, but stands up vertical so footprint is smaller on desk. This drive takes a second to wake up, which also seems different than the older Element drives which didn’t seem to have a ‘sleep mode’. I use this through a USB 3 hub and it doesn’t seem to compromise speed at all. Of note, FAT32 initializing doesn’t work on 3TB drive, so can’t get PC/Mac simultaneous usage. WD makes a great hard drive and I have been impressed with the longevity of WD drives. Would recommend highly.

As I was cut and pasting items from my laptop to the drive in preperation for formating the laptop, I noticed a strange oddity. anything in my Documents folder (Vista) did not cut. Instead it copied. When I tried to delete it on my laptop, it also deleted it on the drive. It cloned my Documents folder. I had to move the files out of my Document folder into a non user folder, then cut and paste them.

I do video work. I bought this drive for archiving but then realized that its twice as fast as the pocket drives I use, I imagine thats because there are 2 raided drives in the enclosure and its not powered off USB, but whatever the reason, cards that took 40 minutes to dump now only take 20 when I use this. I’m going to buy more for the field.
