Decent file transfer speed and power supply is included.

The WD Elements provides affordable storage. My main use is backups, so speed isn’t a major factor. With Windows, the drive will spin down for me when not in use, which is a plus. Also note that there is a power button on the rear of the enclusure, though I have not used it. The drive did disconnect (ie, go offline) for me once during the backup, but I can’t say if the drive was at fault; there could be many other causes. I also wish manufacturers would include a small fan inside of the enclosure. FYI: The actual capacity is 14.5 TB (~16,000,866,779,136 bytes)

I have 7 of these drives now. They are a great price and are quite. I have not had a failure yet or a DOA which is pretty good considering i usually have at least 30-40% DOA on hard drives in the past couple of years and several more fail within 6 months. The WD drives are solid though and i love the small form factor of them so they dont take up so much space. I dont think you can beat these for the price!

Plug it in and start backing up.

This was an easy plug in and go hard drive. The hard drive is affordable, compact, and plenty of room for my pictures. Would recommend.

This WD 4TB external hard drive is the perfect backup system for your computer(s). It can easily handle all of your files (videos, photos, ebooks, etc.) and then some. You an even make a disc image of our computer and save it to this hard drive. I own several WD Elements hard drives and none of them has given me any problems. And with USB 3.0, file copying is fast. Just remember, with all external hard drives, you drop it to a hard surface and you will wind up with a expensive paper weight!

After 1 week, WD 2TB ext hd working great. I use it for pc backups, movies, and home videos. Pros: no unnecessary software, easy hookup, quiet Cons: no front light, no off switch, slow transfer of large files. If it works this good in a year, I’ll be happy. For now, though, I’m cautiously pleased.

I use my 3TB external hard drive to back up both laptops. I have a lot of music on two laptops and a desktop, pictures, videos, and games. It is great because its quiet when it backs up files. Its convenient as well to my needs. The only thing that I can point out about this hard drive is that since its larger it has to remain plugged in to an outlet while the files are being backed up so that you don’t loose any data. I do have a smaller external hard drive that I don’t have to plug into an outlet but its just a small adjustment. Overall thus far I have enjoyed my product and B&H provides good service.

I had just purchased a GoPro and I am anticipating the need for much larger storage than my laptop will offer. I bought two of the 4TB Elements External Drives by WD…one for my main storage and the other for a back-up. I connected the one drive directly into my wireless router using a USB 3.0 connection. I can access this drive from any PC or TV in the house. It is extremely convenient. The drive seems fast and so far, it has met all my expectations. Now all I need to do is go out and start making all those awesome GoPro videos!

The set up was not easy due to a missing software upgrade. WD telephone support was GREAT to help me out. This is my second WD product – I also have a 2TB Passport.

I use this product to store a large amount of videos and music for my Apple TV and the speeds are great for streaming. Good size also sits on top of my tower and is very solid.

Great drive for the price. It’s work. The is no WD software crab to install. I hate WD CD-Rom Software that come up,,, every time you plug in WD external drive. This one is great, it does not have one.

I read a ton of review that said hard drives don’t last very long so I am hoping this one goes the distance. I actually hooked it up and drained my computer just after a major surgery (only semi conscious) so the set up was a no brainer. Looks like I did a pretty good job too! I will write another review after a year to tell how it holds up to hosting my 10 million pictures.

Previous experience with WD backup drives has been good, so I purchased this drive, and a WD My Book 4TB, to back up my 2-3TB internal drives, which contain thousands of photos. I would have preferred a 12TB raid system but this method was about 1/3 the cost, which was important. The Elements drive comes with a one month trial of WD Smartware software for backing up while the My Book, which costs more, comes with a software license (check for free upgrades before using), not an issue when purchasing the two drives together. Installation was easy – USB 3.0 plug and play and drivers installed automatically, until I found I could only see one drive at a time, which was weird because an older 2TB WD drive was visible. After extensive troubleshooting, I eventually found that 2 identical drives can experience a Signature Collision which prevents one from being detected. The fix is simple, once you know what the problem is, and explained in WD Answer ID 3890 for Apple and Windows systems. After this fix they worked fine. The initial backup of each drive took about a day each, but subsequent incremental backups, run at night, have run smoothly. The software is reasonably intuitive and not too difficult to set up. It defaults to user related items such as documents, music, and photos, but can be set to back up system files using the advanced settings. Documentation covers basic troubleshooting but could have been better, as it took me over a day before I could define the problem properly to search the extensive online WD help.

I shucked the drive from the case which may have warranty implications, but works faster than expected at 196MB/s read and 193MB/s write. Actual drive was white label WD120EMFZ. This external hard drive works fine. Just be patient if you have a lot to back up.

Love this drive. 10TB is enough for me to consolidate all my pictures from several other (smaller) drives into one, and still leaving a little space for further fill-up. By the time I need even more space, this drive will get cheaper, or larger drives will become available. What’s not the love about this drive. Nothing. It IS great!

Eight TB for under $200 works for me. The drive is fast enough for the psd files or Apple laptop backup (I have a couple of these drives) and, so far – after a number of weeks – it is well-behaved. It’s a bit old-fashioned with only one (USB 3.0) means of connection. And once connected it starts itself up when I turn on the computer, though it has an on/off switch. This is a bit annoying as I need to eject it, disconnect before startup, or live with it on my desktop if I don’t need to use it. But I suppose there are worse things in life. And this may just be a function of my system, and may not occur with yours. Anyway, it’s working well and I think it is worth the money.

Simple plug and play. No nonsense software to deal with.

I recently needed to upgrade my external hard drive to get some more space and found this item from a well-respected brand at a great price. This is relatively small, sturdy and a huge increase in storage over my previous model. At this inexpensive price, it’s the most cost-effective model available for the storage size.
