If you need to take on anything larger, the WEN 3424EX Bed Extension can be purchased separately to increase the maximum capacity from 18 in. all the way up to 41 in. Adjust the variable speed anywhere from 450 RPM to 3500 RPM with the onboard digital speed display illuminating the current RPM. The WEN Variable Speed Wood Lathe also features an MT2 spindle and tailstock taper for compatibility with all your favorite chucks and centers, along with a spacious 8 in. tool rest to provide support for your chisels and tools. The easy-to-use lever clamping system makes adjustments to both the tool rest and the tailstock simple and precise. Soft startups prevent damage to both your work piece and your motor. This is a very smooth and quite lathe with infinitely variable speed. While it is small in size it has worked well on the projects I work on. I make sturdy doll furniture and this lathe will help me a lot when making doll crib parts, table legs and chair legs and back spindles. I’ve used it on pine and have had great results once I got the hang of it. I like the digital speed indicator and quiet operation.

Upon arrival, I set it up and immediately threw on the toughest, meanest chunk of wood I could find to break her in. She’s solid and aligned well. Only thing is you really need to bolt it down to the sturdiest bench you have if you plan on turning anything bigger that a small bowl because this sucker bucks like a bull. Over all, a good buy.

Wood Lathe, 12 in x 18 in. Well packaged in Styrofoam for shipment and oiled to prevent corrosion of the cast iron. If you need to handle a longer piece of wood, you can buy an extension (3424Ex) (OMSID #308895806). Instructions are good and can be downloaded off the Home Depot website. Lathe is a good size and price for intermediate skilled woodworker. If this is your first lathe, I’d recommend watching a few videos off of YouTube before using the lathe. This lathe has three speed ranges by changing the drive belt and has a dial adjustment within a speed range. Has a digital RPM readout. I would recommend wearing safety glasses with side shields when using a lathe. And if you are a beginner, take things slow.

I have owned and used a lot of wood lathes over the years and I have to say that this one is probably the best I have ever used. The instructions that come with it is very complete and easy to follow on setup, safety and use, even for the first time lathe user. It has a lot of options that make it easy to use for most projects. I love the available extension you can purchase to handle your large projects. Compared to other lathes this one runs pretty quiet, and adjusting speeds is easy and quick.

I recently purchased this lathe and I am very happy with the lathe. It runs great and can’t way to use it more. The rpm LED is very sensitive to the touch and you should use caution not to touch it too often.However, as the title “Veterans beware” states be advised that HD no longer will give a 10% discount to online orders. I did a pickup at the store and asked them to return it and then showed them my Veterans card and asked for the 10% veteran discount. I was informed that the policy changed and they no longer do that. I called corporate and they said the policy had not changed. I then called my local HD again and they said that corporate has made the policy change and veterans can no longer get 10% off their online orders. You can still get it for in store purchases, but not online. For years I have ordered items on line and had them sent to the store and never been denied the 10% veteran discount when the item was returned and recharged to my account. One of the very reasons I shop at HD is that the 10% discount makes them competitive and the convenience. I cannot help to feel that the cancel culture today is the result of HD taking away this discount. I suppose the next step is no more 10% for any veteran…………. Please HD continue to do what is right and respect our veterans, reinstate this discount.

The tool holder is not true square, the tool holder is off to one side when tool is inserted. The knob for tool holder height is in the way when tightening when i select height and tighten down.

This is a heavy duty bench top lathe at around 70 pounds to ensure it doesn’t move or wobble.. The 4.5 amp motor operates at 5 different speeds to handle almost any project. The lathe is set up for the MT2 head and tailstock which will work well with the WEN MT2 wood lathe drive and live center kit which I also purchased with this lathe. The only other item needed was a set of lathe tools and I was ready to get started. The lathe also now has an extension available to purchase. It has been years since I used a wood lathe, but it is fun to get started with one again.
