I’ve been pricing out lathes for quite a while, and the 6 Amp 14 in. x 20 in. WEN Variable Speed Benchtop Wood Lathe kept popping to the top of my list.My very first lathe… and the WEN is an absolute beauty. My grandfather had a lathe, and I remember my dad spending weekends using it to make lamps and clean up stair spindles. LOL, I never got to touch granddad’s lathe. Those days are over. This one is uber sturdy, heavy, and the perfect size for my hobby/weekend warrior adventures. And WEN put together a great instruction book. So it’s now back to Home Depot for some turning tools, then “Lathe Baby, Lathe!”

Great benchtop wood lathe for those looking to turn some wood! Gotta love WEN! This can be used for either the weekend warrior or even professional. Setup is relatively simple, but bear in mind that some additional things might need to be bought, most importantly, a stable stand! Otherwise, definitely secure this down to your benchtop with bolts. It does have rubber feet which keep it in place, but have not tested it with larger pieces, no do I know how this will act over time. The variable speed is very easy to adjust and is displayed nicely on a digital display. Definitely recommend!

So far so good. I am just beginning an I love it…..by the way….I took a class once and the teacher said that the lathe will be the cheapest thing you buy….I think he is right. Be prepared to spend….and love every penny of it.

A well made wood lathe of size and power. Comes with a refreshingly good owner’s guide describing setup, operation and the use of common turning tools. Weighs close to 200 lbs. Must acquire other needed items separately – a (very) sturdy and stable stand, turning tools, safety equipment, calipers, possibly a center finder tool, acetone and paste wax. A little bit surprised that I do not find any of these available from the manufacturer’s website, most especially the stand.Stand height I use places the center of the work just above waist height, well below my chest. Turning tools are available in either steel (traditional, require sharpening after wear) and carbide (newer, require tip replacement after wear). I wear a face shield over prescription safety glasses and a dust mask.Manual belt adjustments give three speed ranges listed as 250-720rpm, 600-1700rpm and 1200-3550rpm. Speed adjustment knob sets speed within each range. Speed is digitally displayed and according to that display I found both low and high endpoints on all ranges to be slightly lower than the speeds listed in the manual with no stock on the lathe. I don’t think high and low point readings of 10-25 rpm less than those stated matter, so not dinging any points for that in this review.Unit sits on 4 rubber feet – so far, they are adequate for keeping it in one place. I have not found it necessary to bolt it to my work table (yet). Acetone is recommended for cleaning off the original anti-rust coating for shipping, followed by paste wax. First project for this lathe will be two flying saucers to sit on top of two tall newel posts. Hopefully.
