Love the lathe Works fantastic I have done many things on it and not disappointed at all

The lathe is strong and sturdy. There are a few things about it that are less than ideal though. The tool rest has chips in it so I couldn’t get a smooth motion until I ground it smooth. The center of the head stock and the tail stock are slightly out of alignment so when using a drill chuck, the bit would bend a bit causing the hole to get elongated. Finally, the motor runs really hot. After about 5 minutes, it is too hot to touch. I have to interrupt turning often to let the motor cool. All that said, the motor is sufficiently powerful that I’ve not had any trouble turning any stock. The head and tail stock are cast and quite solid, I’ve not had any trouble with wobbling or drifting. Now that I’ve adjusted to the things I mentioned, I’m quite happy with the lathe and look forward to many years of use.

A really good lathe at an excellent price. I bought this to replace my WEN Mini Lathe and I’m not disappointed. So far, it’s doing everything I ask of it.

Great starter lathe for me to begin learning how to turn. The motor gets really hot, but it works smoothly and effectively. After a few weeks it has proven sufficient for my needs at this stage.

Ben, Why would you purchase a 5 speed lathe knowing speed changes are manual, and then complain that it “is a pain.” Moreover, lathes should ALWAYS be solidly mounted and NEVER stand free. The rubber feet are more serving as vibration dampeners than to be expected to keep a lathe from moving around. There’s this byproduct of using a lathe called sawdust, and to my knowledge it tends to cause surfaces to become slick. Anyways….This is indeed a solid, well-maufactured lathe. Suited well for experienced turners that tend to stay within the size and types of projects this lathe can handle. For those that enjoy smaller projects like pen kits, candle stick holders, etc., imo this is the way to go rather than the smaller, variable speed model. This model just has a much better feel to it as far as solidarity of the unit itself, and more versatitlity. If you turn smaller projects often, OR can’t stand people that pay with a written check, get nausiated at the idea of hand writing a letter to mail to a friend, I would recommend the variable speed. Get the larger variable speed lathe if you are turning a wider range of projects often. However, if you DO NOT TURN OFTEN….. BEN HAS FORWARNED WE CONSUMERS ABOUT THE PITFALLS so we can ALL be advised!!!!! Changing the speed requires removing TWO plates!!!! Then, you have to make MINOR ADJUSTMENTS!! AND moving the belt??? Dont even get me started!!! WHAT A PAIN!!!! Actually, its quite simple. Not sure there is even a minute of work involved to carry out this blatently obvious requirement when buying a 5 speed lathe…. I mean…. who buys a lathe without a VFD and then complains about it??? Oh, the same type that assume a lathe is ok to operate without mounting to a solid surface. Thats like grilling hamburgers and using your hand as the spatula. Sure its possible, but far from smart with a bit of serious safety issues thrown in for fun.I apologize, I am an active member of Keep America Not Dumb, and participate in their drive Identify Dumbheads. I gave this to my boyfriend for Christmas. He has never had a lathe before, so this was very exciting for him. So far, he loves it. He did say the chuck removing wrench was flimsy, so he ended up reshaping it after it bent. Other than that, he loves this lathe!
