Excellent lathe. Plenty of power so far for everything I’ve turned, from 10″ bowls from hickory to bats from oak, hickory, ash, and pecan.

Fantastic little machine.I truly love this little lathe. I have a small 8″x12″ that I really like but this is so much more solid. Very well made with a well machined bed and a good sized #2 Morse taper in both headstock and tailstock. The locking levers are plenty large, handy and work well. I am old school meaning I was raised on belt changing for speed control. People have gotten too used to turning a knob for speed control. Don’t get me wrong, I like that too but there are disadvantages in that also. I find this little baby very easy to change speeds. Simply unlock the tensioning lever, release belt tension and move to desired speed and retention belt. WHAM, BAM you have changed speed. Yes, it takes a few steps, maybe a minute if you are slow and you ‘only’ have 5 speeds to work with but that should be more than adequate for this size lathe. I do miss the “soft start” of my little 8″ lathe. Another plus if and when your belt wears out or breaks it is so easy to replace.Take the time to wipe the packing “grease” off EVERY part. I know, it does not look like packing grease but IT IS. Wipe it off, even the inside tapers and disassemble the tailstock screw and clean it also. It will turn much freer. I personally disassembled even the tool rest assembly and cleaned it. As a retired machinist I am fussy about sharp edges and burrs. I removed the sharp edges on the bed and bottom of tool rest and tailstock AND I flat stoned everything so they would slide better, even the faceplate had some dings on it. I found one MAJOR QUALITY ISSUE that caused me to rate Quality a 4 out of 5; The live and drive centers were not protected except in a plastic bag so the points were blunted and mushroomed somewhat. Also the drive spurs had some nasty burrs. Probably not affect accuracy but I cleaned them up. I was not happy with the inside casting because it is very coarse.A few hints: use some foam packing and cut a blind hole in them to fit your drive center and live center to protect them. It does not take much of a bump to damage the fine points although mine were already damaged from poor packing and shipping practice from manufacturer. To clean them up pop them in the headstock and turn it on and gently stone the taper & point.Check all bolts for tightness. I had some that were a little loose. Make sure the motor pivot IS loose so the belt tension lever works.

Very solid and rigid compared to my first lathe that was not solid enough and rigid enough to turn wood logs into bowls . I am very pleased with this lathe . I have made some very nice bowls from a tree I cut down in my backyard. Thanks for a great product .

It’s a game changer folks. It’s not my first lathe, or my first rodeo. All of the conveniences that come on the more expensive lathes are here. Solid construction, and easy to adjust .Comes with a drive spur, and face plate for the head stock, and a live center for the tail-stock. All tools are included for assembly, with the exception of a flat blade screwdriver. My bench-top was not 100% level, but the feet can be turned to level the lathe. The taper is MT2. The head stock threading is 1 inch x 8 tpi. What that means is if you already own a Nova chuck, it will fit right on with no adapter. The tools for the lathe (2 Allen wrenches, drive spur center, live center, and face plate wrench) are stored conveniently on the lathe in a molded holder. All of the hardware locks in place easily. The tool-rest is nearly 8 inches. Doing the math tells you that it covers more than half of your work pieces’ length. The great news is that adjusting the banjo only requires a quarter turn of the handle. If you don’t know what a banjo is, it is the part that holds your tool rest. The 5-speed belt system is awesome. It will save you $100.00+ by not purchasing a variable speed system. If you want this lathe with variable speed, I recommend a rheostat. The motor on this lathe is strong enough for me to turn a 10 -inch plate, and some really deep bowls. The motor does seem to get a bit hot, but only after I give it quite a workout. Great job, Wen, for giving the small shop wood-worker the opportunity to work with a good quality lathe; at a more than reasonable price!

Excellent overall product, I wish all small parts were metal. Less than a month has gone by and the plastic tool post lever broke. Still usable though.

I purchased this lathe specifically to clean up and sand some legs for a nightstand I was refinishing. It handled that task easily and saved me many man hours of sanding by hand. I will eventually purchase the bed extension, because without it you are really limited in project size.

Works amazingly, everything is quick and simple to adjust. Just wish it would have come with a set of 3 main turning tools.

I own both the 8×12 and 12×18 WEN lathe and am completely satisfied with both. The next model up has expanded my project abilities tenfold! The motor is powerful and the entire tool seems very sturdy and for sure ready to last for years of work. I just purchased the WEN electric chainsaw after seeing how great it is for preparing wood to put on the lathe!

This WEN is a well made wood lathe and I’d definitely recommend it for the home craftsman or professional needing a nice compact lathe, It has a strong 4.5 amp motor and has 5-speeds for any carving project. It runs very quiet and doesn’t vibrate the bench, however it can be mounted to the bench top to prevent it from moving when molding stock. The tool rest is made or cast iron and the slide operated very efficiently. The assembly and operating instructions are very complete and detailed. I’m looking forward to many years of wood projects with my WEN 12 inch x 18 inch wood lathe.

Mini lathe works like a pro and is a work horse! I have been restoring a 140 year old rocking chair and had to turn some new spindles from various hardwoods. The multi speed option is manually moving the belt to the different sprockets and semi time consuming.
