Great little lathe! Speed changes are easy and fast, takes less than a minute when you get used to it. Centers lined up perfectly out of the box. Enough power to turn everything I’ve thrown at it. Very smooth, zero vibration and the tail stock and tool test are very sturdy and easy to move.

This is a really solid machine with great torque on startup.

Had this lathe for a short time and already love it. It has features like a 3/4 HP motor, 1×8 TPI head shaft, 12” swing over bed and an MT2 head and tail stock. You do have to move the belt on pulleys to change speeds but this takes about 30 seconds. At $273 it’s quite a deal. Strong and quiet.

I’m a hobby woodworker and have had 3 other lathes. This 12 x 18 wen. is a solid lathe that will get the job done.I have turned spindles and a small bowl . Used a 21/8 bit in tail stock to bore a hole in the purple heart to start the inside of the bowl. motor did the job just fine. Others have mentioned that the motor runs hot and it does. The temp on mine was 189. I made a temp check on my other equipment and that was average temp. band saw was 178 belt disk sander Wes 195.so yes I recommend this model.

I haven’t had this unit very long but it arrived in good shape, setup easily, was in alignment and worked according to my expectations. Just what I was looking for in this price point.

This wood lathe is very sturdy and you can bolt it down to a table top if you want to.It has multiple adjustments to it for wood length and how deep you want to carve into the wood.It is limited to a couple sizes for the length but I think it is going to come in handy for making table legs and even spindles. It has a powerful motor that is surprisingly not too loud.It does have five speeds. It comes with everything you need all you add is the wood you want! Very well made and easy to use.

For the cost, it is great. It has features of a machine costing much more.

I have not used it much so far, but for a couple times I used it this machine worked very well. I would recommend also purchasing the WEN bench to secure the lathe and to use it at the proper height.

Being my first time ever touching a lathe, this purchase has been amazing and a great learning situation. For a first time device at this time I find it an incredible tool and easy use.

This product is a win for WEN. It is a well-made solid piece of machinery. Very solid in fact. It weighs in at just over 70 pounds. It comes mostly assembled. There are just a few items you will need to attach. It does require a manual change of the belt in order to switch speeds. But, that is not very difficult to do. It is necessary to open two access doors and lift the motor with a lever, and then the belt can be moved easily to a different speed. There are easier systems on more expensive machines, but this works just fine. Don’t be concerned about it. The tool rest moves easily and locks down with no issues. The motor is quite large and appears capable of handling the tasks at hand. Of course, that can only be determined with long term use. But, I do have other WEN tools and I have put some of them through their paces over the past couple of years and I have yet to have a motor give out. The one thing I may have concern about in the future is the horsepower and maximum rotation speed. I will not know if 3/4 horsepower is sufficient until I have had time to do lots of turning under different circumstances. And the same goes for the maximum RPM of 3400. I would have preferred 4000 but again time will tell. But all in all, a good mid-level lathe for the price.

It is a starter lathe and that is OK, what I needed to get myself oriented with wood turning. I have other Wen products and so far I have had good luck with the performance and quality. I would recommend this product.

In the future I would like to update this review because one does not get to know a new wood lathe overnight. What I have observed so far is impressive. Good weight: 70+ pounds for stability. Size: Large enough for most home projects. With the Live Center in place, I unlocked the Tailstock and slid it toward the Headstock which also had the Spur Center mounted. These two points met exactly (see picture). A toolmaker would want to achieve this level of precision; and this WEN 3424 is ready to deliver accurate turning. It is up to the craftsperson to mark the exact centers of the work piece in order to benefit from this.Reading the specs one will see it comes with the basics plus a Face Plate, Tool Rest, Adjustment Tools, and a handy Accessory Holder.

This is a great lathe for pen turning which is why it was purchased. The belt changing is not hard, it is a very stable machine I don’t have it bolted to the bench. First thing I did was check the live center to the center spur on the motor side, they were right on. My only complaint is that the picture on Home Depot’s website shows that the motor has a finned heat shield around it, mine doesn’t have one . The motor does get warm I will keep my eye on it. That should not be a deal breaker. Also like the factory 2 yr warranty.
