I needed a small, portable saw for a variety of projects. This is easy to hold and handle and fits my needs. I look forward to finding new applications to use this saw in my home and for crafting.

I ordered the Wen 5 Amp 3 1/2 inch Plunge Cut Compact Circular Saw partly out of need partly on a whim. I’m getting ready to install another Luxury Vinyl Tile floor and in my experience the tiles are much easier to cut with a saw than a utility knife. A saw is quicker and provides a cleaner cut as well. I was also curious about the plunge cut capability for small jobs I’m doing away from my shop. In that I haven’t really used it long term all of my thoughts and comments are based on only one afternoon’s testing. It’s pretty good for cutting both vinyl and larger pieces of ceramic tile but just ok for “freelancing” notches and cut-outs when doing trim work due to the spring loaded “plunge” base plate. It did acceptably well at ripping 3/4″ plywood with a saw guide. The handle is comfortable but takes a little getting used to. This is my first tool with a laser guide and I found it very handy after I made the first few cuts. Blade changes are quick and easy – the saw comes with a metal and plastic cutting blade (which I have yet to try), a 24 tooth “softwood” blade which was sufficient for the plywood and trim I cut and a diamond grit blade which cut standard 3×6 subway tiles without difficulty. The tool is well balanced with no vibration or wobble when it is running. It does not take a monster extension cord (14 ga is sufficient) when working over 100′ from your power source. I did not experience any kick back on the several plunge cuts I tried – it didn’t break a 3/8″ thick floor tile when I plunge cut out a 4″x4″ square in its middle although it took over 5 minutes to do it. The hard plastic case is sturdy and protective but like too many other cases it’s not quite big enough to easily stuff the cord into once you remove the packing twist ties. While it doesn’t make the fastest cuts and it throws out a lot of dust even with the vacuum attachment hooked up it’s convenient smaller size makes it a good addition for a handyman, hobbiest or weekend craftsman.

We have about 30 Palm Trees on our property. This makes quick work of the trimmed Fawns in the hard to reach places. It gives them the “manicured” look, and my wife really appreciates the extra effort. The only downside is the inlaws want me to do theirs now. It’s a surprisingly robust saw that can handle just about anything you throw at it.

Nice powerful compact plunge cut circular saw. Comes with the three types of blades that you will most commonly use. I used it for cutting sheet-rock and flooring and it worked great. The vacuum tube did wonders to reduce dust. And the laser was easy to use with the plunge cut feature. I did contact customer service (which was wonderful) about aligning it as mine was a little off out of the box. Relatively easy to do by removing the cover and adjusting with the laser mounting screws. I was told that there may be an update with external adjustment screws but I solved my problem easily and unless I abuse it should be good forever. The fence mounts easily and works great too. The only complaint that I have is that the nice case has a burnt smell to it. I wonder what kind of plastic it’s made from?
