Put it right to work!I’m building an “L” shaped set of bunk beds for my grandchildren. The bed has 9 legs all of which have two or three mortises.Bill

Absolutely wonderful cast iron bench mortiser. Assembly was relatively easy and can be easily accomplished by 1 person. The adjustable fence is a great feature. This bench mortiser includes several chisel bits which easily cut into wood without causing chipping or any kind of breakout. This machine is perfect for the average DIYer out there looking to complete projects. Highly recommend!

is good for medium and small parts

The mortise machine was easy to set up and it die a nice job cutting hard maple. You will need to check measurements often to make sure they’re no movement in the material. Reasonable price for a decent Mortiser.

Excellent machine

It is okay, but probably should’ve looked around longer. The bits aren’t that great, so maybe why I’m not so impressed. The bits like to pull out of the chuck or get clogged and bind. The clamp doesn’t hold as well as I would like. The machine was easy to assemble and use once set up (minus) the bit problem. Seems like with more work and tweaks, I might get the machine I want. Recommend with reservations.

Bought this mortiser to make breadboard ends for a five foot wide dining room table I am building for my wife. It performed very well mortising the red oak two inches deep. For a bench top machine it can’t be beat.

Easy set up and use. It is well worth the pricing. I have a total of 3 WEN tools in my shop and have been very happy with all of them

Bought the WEN mortiser online. I’ve just returned it and have chosen a much more expensive unit. The machining tolerances were far too lax in the bushing to provide a precise 90º chisel mounting. A replacement 3/4” bushing did not improve that precision. Home Depot and WEN CSRs were superb.

This bench top mortiser serves exceptionally well given its size. The first attribute I noticed was its substantial heft. Its cast parts are robust. And the 5 Amp (0.8 HP) motor is no lightweight power source for a machine tool this size. The wooden table surface is a sacrificial piece to protect one’s chisels. Guides and bushings are accurate. Hence the single fence guide suffices where other mortisers bear two guides slotted into the machine base. In the same way, the gas shock retracting mechanism replaces competitors’ dual coil springs and mast tabs which increase those machines’ footprint areas. So the WEN tool occupies a marginally smaller shop space. As a matter of practicality, outriggers or bed extensions almost always are required. Without an alternative to permanently mounting this tool (I would not recommend doing otherwise.) I bolted it to a small mobile workbench. In this way the mortiser can reside in the shop periphery and be brought out adjacent to roller stands and additional benches serving as bed extensions when in use. Other machined surfaces (mast rack, depth limit, fine adjustment, hold down, etc.) are well-finished. I particularly like the ratcheting chuck handle. Optimum handle position is important to assure feed rate and pressure are commensurate with the grain encountered. Tool storage and the manufacturer’s foresight to provide a “drill press” chuck and extension are highly desirable features. I think it is worth note to be mindful of not abusing the set screws and fine adjustment screws. I’ve long had this habit. But recently I researched the required torque for these types of fasteners – then greatly softened my touch. Having become more ginger with my Allen keys has paid big rewards with less frustration / breakage / marred surfaces… and those gentlemanly pressures are wholly adequate to set up this mortiser. The safety switch is a good idea. I welcome shop guests; be they DIYers, curious acquaintances or doting grand kids, but other attractions encourage young ‘uns to pet and touch. Since receiving this tool I’ve enjoyed preparing joints (with tenons Dadoed on my table saw) for shelves and trays. I fashioned some grilles and racks for decorative display bases. The mortiser addresses a broad range of pocket dimensions (with an adequate stroke (depth of cut) for most). One will not be accomplishing post-and-beam construction with this tool, but it does an excellent job for (non-production) furniture making and casework. I particularly was pleased with having built cabinet fronts with tenoned stiles as opposed to my former lap joints. I also prefer the convenience of mortise-and-tenon when dry fitting some of my projects. For those fortunate enough to have a large mortiser, this machine adds utility to the shop where inlays, recesses and penetrations – not doable with a router – are desired in smaller work pieces, plaques, cover plates, storage compartments, tool & gadget holders, drop-in work surfaces and the like. I’m presently using the tool to finesse some special pieces for my model railroad diorama.

Works great !!! Built well and makes the job so much easier. Have make two tables and a chair with no issues . While I had not been a big fan of Wen products in the past , I was presently surprised and would recommend this product

It’s heavier than I expected. I’m sure it will perform well for my limited needs. Much better than using a chisel.

The wen bench top mortise is a wonderful tool. It is easy to set up and use. The fence has a great range of adjustability to it as also does the hold-down and depth stop. It produces great mortise’s with easy and no effort. The first task I tossed at it was making a arts and craft style console table. The quarter swan oak I was using posed no threat to it. It operated with ease and produced nice clean holes. No breakout or chipping done to the wood

Needs a better stop for depth. I had to mark bit to watch I didn’t go to deep

My first mortises were a raging success!! I only needed to cut eight 1/2″ wide mortises about 3″ long and 3″ deep and it handled the job perfectly. I do not try to push tools beyond their means and I never have (I take care of my tools). I’m not sure how the tool would stand up to really cranking down on the handle and using more force that required but it cut well in my maple table legs. Do your research on proper use of this tool AND proper height differences of the bit and chisel and you should be fine. My only complaint is the legs I was cutting into were 5″ x 5″ and I needed to remove the included wood bed to allow enough clearance for the chisel but that is absolutely no fault of the tool. I set up some crude stop blocks to get consistent cuts in each legs and it worked well.

Being too heavy, the base should have been bigger. Still adjusting to the lever positioning.
