We don’t have a lot of experience with word work and have never owned chisels. Since Pinterest is always popping up with new projects that look fun we thought we’d try these out. First we were impressed by the packaging. The chisels came in a wood box for storage. Second the chisels are a nice weight and seems to be high quality. While none of our experimental projects are anything to brag about, with some practice we are confident that these will make a great addition to our DIY projects.

Nice set. Works very well. Box it came in was disappointing. Fell apart right after opening, found out it was not glued when made.

Great set of cutting tools! Very sharp, they hold their sharpness, and extra long. The handles are made of England beech, feels great in your hand, comfortable and easy to hold while turning wood. The set comes in a nice wooden box for storage. Set includes an oval skew, parting tool, two spindle gouges, round nose scraper and a roughing gouge. Super nice set and a great addition to my wood shop!

This is a good starter set of lathe chisels, and includes all the chisels you would need to get started turning. That said, some of the chisels are better than others, and if you get serious about turning, you’re going to want to replace individual chisels over time with better tools. I’m also not totally happy about the selection–rather than having two different sized gouges, I’d rather have either a proper bowl gouge, or a flat (rather than rounded) scraper. The best chisel in the lot is the roughing gouge. It is made from pretty hard steel, and maintains an edge nicely while rough-rounding hardwood. The other gouges do nice work as well. For some reason, the parting tool does not work well for me compared to another that I have. The skew chisel is really bad–the steel is too soft, and the edge deformed quickly. It is ground to a very small angle, and being oval, it is a pain to sharpen. The scraper is OK, ground to what I think is a bit too steep of an angle, but it does its job sufficiently well. Again, this is a good starter set, and it’s nice to see HD carrying some lathe tooling to go along with the Wen lathe they offer. Note that this set is essentially identical to the set with larger handles. It just has shorter handles, which work fine in most applications and will give you less fatigue over time.

Chisels and gouges work good. The metal isn’t very hard and I keep having to sharpen one of the chisels. I’m thinking carbide as a replacement.

Beautiful set. Unfortunately I was supposed to buy hand chisels not lathe chisels so I will be returning them.

Still learning how wood turning works. So far so good.

Just keep them sharp and there is no need for high price tools

The chisels and the handles were beautiful. I have not used them very much yet, but I think they will be a great step up from my current set. HOWEVER; The wooded box they are packaged in is terrible. Both the top panel and bottom panel were loose with the bottom actually falling off the frame. I used wood glue and long wood staples to do some repairs, as I need to keep the chisels put away. So, if the quality of the box is not a bother, these chisels will not disappoint.

The tools are well made, just not very good for hard woods. Lose their sharpness after 5-10 minutes depending on the hardness. Great for soft woods such as pine.

This is a great beginner set. Certainly able to do some great lathe turning projects. My husband and I are not tall people, so working with the shorter length chisels is actually great! But these will dull quickly.
