Great starter set for the beginner with a wood lathe. The solid Ashe, ergonomic handles are easy to hold which allow for productive wood turning all day long! Between skewing, gouging and parting, this 6-piece set provides a nice variety and has you covered for your many projects! The box the kit comes in looks, nice, but lacks in details. The inside of the box is poorly put together with cheap foam. Additionally, the box could really use a handle to carry around!

I haven’t wood turned in many years, but I decided to explore how well I could work with these Wen artisan wood turning tools. I started out with a 2″ x 2″ square x 12″ long piece of dry Oak. I used the 18.5″ long, 1″ spindle gouge to trim off the square stock to a rough round stock. Next, I used the 18.5″ long, 1″ skew to smooth out the rough round wood stock. I marked the areas with a pencil, where I wanted to gouge out. Using the 1″, 1/2″ long & short spindle gouges, I removed wood to create the gentle curves on the wood stock. I used the 1″ skew chisel to create deep cuts, flat surfaces & help round out the curves. The 3/16″ parting tool gave me good deep cuts & square edges. All chisels are very sharp. The ergonomic design of the solid Ash handles made it very comfortable to hold. The solid construction & length of each chisel assembly, gave me maximum stability & control. The overall length of the chisels varies from the 22.5″ long 1/2″ spindle gouge To the 16 3/4″ long, 1/2″ spindle gouge. The beautiful wooden case, with finger joint corner construction & two latch closures, is compartmentalized for each chisel to sit in it’s own seat & not shift around, when being moved from one place to another. My wife liked the products of my wood turning, so she painted & put them on display. This is a great set of turning chisels!

Not a bad product for the beginner, not sharpened the way they should be so you will need a bench grinder and some proper grinding wheels to go with them.

It took me awhile to really get a sense for using these. I’ve been a weekend woodworker for awhile but never really took the plunge into turning. A few projects were on my wish lists and they would make use of a lathe so I picked up a used model off of CL. This set of chisels ended up being my first set and how I practiced and learned the basics essentially from YouTube videos. Overall I’ve been quite pleased. Despite my learning curve I’ve been able to produce some decent work and by no fault of my tools. They’ve stayed sharp even with hardwoods. They’re fairly comfortable in hand and give good confidence you’ll be able to perform the cut you desire. I’ve realized I’m not going to do enough turning to invest more than I have and I’m totally okay with that. This chisel set + my used lathe get me results that have exceeded my expectations for sure!

This is a good starter set of lathe chisels, and includes all the chisels you would need to get started turning. That said, some of the chisels are better than others, and if you get serious about turning, you’re going to want to replace individual chisels over time with better tools. I’m also not totally happy about the selection–rather than having two different sized gouges, I’d rather have either a proper bowl gouge, or a flat (rather than rounded) scraper. The best chisel in the lot is the roughing gouge. It is made from pretty hard steel, and maintains an edge nicely while rough-rounding hardwood. The other gouges do nice work as well. For some reason, the parting tool does not work well for me compared to another that I have. The skew chisel is really bad–the steel is too soft, and the edge deformed quickly. It is ground to a very small angle, and being oval, it is a pain to sharpen. The scraper is OK, ground to what I think is a bit too steep of an angle, but it does its job sufficiently well. Again, this is a good starter set, and it’s nice to see HD carrying some lathe tooling to go along with the Wen lathe they offer. Note that this set is essentially identical to the set with smaller handles. It just has longer handles, which can be nice when working on awkwardly shaped pieces.

These tools are a great start. You will also feel the need to add a hallowing tool and a thin cut off tool. They keep their edge quite well for a starter set. I’m glad that i got them

Good chisels. I give them this rating because I just began using a wood lathe have never used any other gouges to compare them with.

Excellent. The chisels were sharp, a good weight and easy to use on my bench top lathe.
